Slowdown when using mklink /J for System/User Temp folders

Hi,

I am experiencing some slowdown when I create junctions for my Temp folders. Is this typical?

Usually I'd edit Environment Variables or use a third party program to move all Temp to RAM Disk but my only option now is to use junctions due to the fact some Adobe products won't work correctly unless it thinks Temp is on C drive.

I changed:

C:\Windows\Temp
C:\Users\me\AppData\Local\Temp

They redirect to my RAM Disk.

The slowdown comes in the form of extracting large RAR files or internet activity. Pages take longer to load and become slightly sticky, I also noticed when re-installing Firefox and Flash player it took an age to download in their respective installers.

My internet speedtest showed:

DL: 94MBit
UP: 11MBit

Downloading a 7GB file gave me 12.7MB/s.

Youtube videos play fine and load instantly, it's mainly to do with page elements such as applying the style sheets or something.

If I delete the junction, pages are blazing fast and unpacking a large RAR takes no time at all.

Any idea why this happens?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. :D

I think I solved my problem, though I have no idea why it works.

I switched from using junctions (/J) to using symbolic links (/D).

Now all is snappy and normal.

To assure myself I uninstalled Flash player and re-installed it twice comparing both /J and /D.

When using /J - Flash installed in 4 minutes 24 seconds.

When using /D - Flash installed in 4 seconds.

Would be neat to read any explanation as to why that happens but no worries, just wanted to post my solution.
