I have an open case with Microsoft right now pertaining to SP1 being installed on my machine via windows update feature. this machine is set to auto update at a certain time when updates become available. I am just unhappy that a beta was released via windows update and Microsoft telling me no I must have downloaded it and manually installed.

Anyone else have this issue?

ITrant4u if you follow the link at the start of this thread to the Technet page for the sp1 beta download you will see 3 download links. The first two "if run" will set your windows update settings to allow sp1 beta to be downloaded and installed though windows update. You didn't happen to download and run one of those did you?

On the Technet download page linked to in the other sp1 beta thread there are two other downloads. They are small executables that when run will enable sp1 beta to be downloaded and installed via windows update. You didn't happen to download run one of those files by mistake did you?

No and that is my argument to microsoft who believes i did. I admin our client with SBS 2008 for update pushes. Nothing hits the clients unless i approve. Win7 SP1 Beta was never listed or approved. And since I had a Defender update hanging out there this morning i shutdown the machin choosing to install updates. there were two of them didn't even look and install shutdown. Came back up and noticed i had the Evaluation copy build 7601 in the bottom left hand corner. I have a Technet account and explained to Microsoft i haven't logged in with that account for a month or so.

Just glad i am the only one with Win7 at this point.

No one has access to my machine. I am the network admin for the company. which is why i am more concerned than an average user.

Thanks Barefoot I am aware of the uninstall. Beta's should not be pushed through W_Updates for a reason.

Obviously, if this were really happening, more than one person would have experienced it. In fact, it would probably have made national news by now. I tend to believe that this was a user error, more than likely the links that "AlphaNumeric" spoke of.

Explain to me Mr. Senior Member Mac how visiting technet searching for SP1 beta clicking a few links downloading settings to allow install of SP1 beta is USER ERROR. I just recently installed Win7 a few weeks ago. Again like a mentioned earlier the windows updates that hits my clients are managed from SBS 2008 server. Updates are approved by me before reaching the workstations. SP1 never was listed as an available update. Just went to shutdown the machine to which i only have access to and optioned when shutting down to install updates. I didn't look at what updates were waiting for this was on Wednesday a day after i approved 1 update from SBS2008 to be delivered. I'm waiting for a call back from Microsoft today and will keep this post updated.

IT, surly you can understand that it being user error at some where along the line makes more sense than only one person getting SP1 beta via windows update. If you really do work with computers, then I'm sure you also know some people refuse to admit they did something wrong/stupid. I'll use this as an example. Also, If everything you say is true, then you had to approve it at some point. It's like the unstoppable force meeting the unmovable object. One of the assumptions must be false.

EDIT: not trying to blame you. Just stating why we don't jump to blaming MS. Are you sure no one else had access to your workstation or could have visited the site on another computer and caused this whole mess?

Well it certainly could be a bug in the eway windows update was handling the file given a very small set of circumstances.

Since it it possible to simply run a small file to add it to windows update manually, there clearly exists the /possibility/ that given the right set of circumstances it could happen by accident.

But of course if this is happening then it's certainly NOT intentional in anyway shape or form.

I believe if you click though to that final Technet download page you will find that the Button is titled "Download the SP1 beta though windows update". It doesn't say "install". I initially clicked the one for the x64 edition and ended up with a small executable. I've since deleted it so I don't know what it was titled. I actually did double click it thinking it would download SP1 not install it. Nothing happened or so I thought until the I was prompted in the notification area that updates were available. Checking the list I saw that SP1 beta was listed. I checked it to be ignored and went on to download the full ISO file. I consider myself fairly tech savvy and it still happened to me. :o I don't think anybody here is trying to point fingers or imply that you don't know what you are doing. I can tell that you are frustrated, but don't take it out on use, we are just trying to help you figure out what happened. I don't know what happened so I can only guess based on my experience with it. My guess is with the user error scenario, user being the person that uses the PC not you.

Possibly at some point in the past an option to accept a beta patch was accepted and it stuck in place till now?
