Suspected .Net Framework Update Problems

Hi,

I'll try and cut a long story short :sarc:

*I'm using a 4 month old Lenovo T420 running windows 7 pro x64.
*Until a few days ago the system was working fine with no issues what so ever.
*Left the laptop to run windows update & left the office, during which there was a power cut and laptop shutdown mid update.
*For the next few days start-ups were very slow and any attempts to re-run windows update caused the computer to freeze mid update. I suspected the problem was coming from the .Net Framework as that was the update showing as 'failed' in the log.
*Scoured various forums and tried to 'repair' the .Net Framework but did not help.
*Decided that as I did not have many files on the computer to do a factory reset using a lenovo recovery usb which I had created from the "Lenovo_Recovery" partition when I first received the laptop.
*Surprisingly although I reformatted the whole computer it still started up slowly and ran slowly. When I try to use IE it just freezes and does not open.
*I ran windows updates again and all installed correctly apart from some relating to the .NEt Framework, the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and an update for XML Core Services 4.0 sp2. Error messages are "Code 1", "Code 8007045D" and "Code FF"
*Saw in another thread to use KB947821 System Readiness Tool which I used. Read that it might take hours but completed in about 20mins.

Hope all of the above made sense! Any help really appreciated. Thanks

dik,
Welcome to SevenForums.

Just so that we can run some other tests first, I want you to "hide" any updates you can't install.

You will be able to "unhide" them later. What this does is delay any attempts by Win 7 to install the problematic updates.

Control Panel | Windows Update | Check for Updates (left-hand side) | click on the ".... updates are available" |
Select all of the problematic updates | Right-click on one of those you selected | click on "Hide Updates" |
OK button

Now you can go back and | click on the ".... updates are available" | click on any updates you want to install | OK button

Later we will unhide the hidden updates.

Now I need you to fill out your system specs. Use this write-up and use Speccy.

Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (located on the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec
(left-hand column)

To gather info, use Speccy (my favorite) or SIW or System Info

Add the word laptop or desktop or netbook to the
“system manufacturer” block, for example,
Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the “Other Info” block for Optical Reader,
Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor, etc

Scroll down and click on SAVE CHANGES.

Dear Karl,

Thank you for your post. FYI, I have just done a fresh format using the Lenovo Recovery USB I have as the laptop was unusable. Have now installed Speccy and update my information as requested. I've hidden all updates relating to .NET Framework 3.5.1, 4.0 and XML Core and run all other updates. Can not use IE etc so am downloading/posting using another computer.

Awaiting your further instructions... :)

EDIT: After installing updates I was instructed to restart. Once it restarted I was met with a message that Windows failed to start and the laptop then launched "Lenovo Thinkvantage Technologies". Hung on this for 30mins and eventually started "Startup Repair".

And the status now is ?

I suspect that you have already shot yourself in the back (difficult isn't it, when one thinks about it).

Please carry out following:
Install CCleaner:
CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

list of STARTUP PROGRAMS

CCleaner | Tools
icon | Startup button | Windows tab |
click on Save to text file button (bottom right side) |
accept Startup.txt as file name | SAVE button

list of SCHEDULED TASKS

CCleaner | Tools
icon | Startup button | Scheduled Tasks tab |
click on Save to text file button (bottom right side) |
enter Scheduled Tasks as File name | Save button

List of INSTALLED PROGRAMS

CCleaner | Tools
icon | Uninstall button |
click on Save to text file button (bottom right side) |
accept install.txt as File name | Save button

UPLOAD the startup.txt file
UPLOAD the Scheduled Tasks.txt file

After around 4hrs it eventually loaded up the login screen. I logged in but while it was doing that I fell asleep! Laptop was in sleep mode when i woke up so I powered on, logged in, and it took me to a black desktop with the corner of one window showing, left it for 1hr but it did not change and couldn't do anything, did a hard shut down.

How did I shoot myself in the back? By reformatting the computer? I assumed any Windows related problems would be alleviated by rolling everything back to a factory reset...

Have to leave now, will try later to start it up again and install CCleaner. Don't think I'll be able to...

As expected. Tried to boot up both normally and in safe mode. Takes a very long time just to reach the login page. Then the desktop is just black. Eventually after 40mins or so in safe mode looking at a black screen, a message popped up to say windows explorer was not responding.

Clean install? I thought thats what the recovery USB was for; Reinstall Windows + all the relevant Lenovo drivers?
