Swaping ram between two compatable Laptops..

Hello,

I have a laptop; Lenovo Ideapad z580, With 6gb's or ram.
and an Toshiba seatlite l675d with 4GB or ram...

Both pc's only have 2 slots for ram And i wanted to make the toshiba slightly faster...

So... I swapped a 2gb with a 4gb to give them both 5GB of ram....

But when i hit the flag key (windows start key) and type SYSTEM on both to bring up the processor ram rating ect.. page..

My lenovo still says it has its full 6gb of ram, and the toshiba still says it has only 4gb or ram... both pc's use ddr3 204 pin so-dim which i looked up before attempting this...

Was this a dumb idea? did i break somthing? can i fix this? or will it not work?
I really dont want to spend 40$ on a simple ram upgrade..

Any help? or am i just stupid?

The Z580 had 6GB of ram before you swapped it and the L675D had 4.

You said you swapped a 2GB with the laptop that had 4 so that means the L675D now have 6GB, leaving the Z580 with 4. Unless you added a stick with 1GB of ram. Which in this case, I think you installed a 2GB stick.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

As for your question, it is not dumb to do such things. Go to the BIOS to check the total amount of memory. You did not break something, it must have been the amount of ram you changed.

Didn't you swapped the 2G stick instead of the 4G stick?

sorry, I ment a 2 with a 3, lenovo is 3x2 and the toshiba was 2x2

so now they both have a 3gb stick and a 2gb stick making them both have physically 5GB

But for somereason. when i open SYSTEM, like i said it still shows 6gb in the lenovo and 4gb in the toshiba

There is no 3G memory stick. They are 1, 2, 4, 8, 16...
You have to be more clear.
3x2 = (2+2+2). As laptops only has 2 slots, it must be (4+2)
2x2 = (2+2)

oh? it said six so i was assuming thats how it worked, so did i swap a 2 with a 2 on accident? ill have to try the other one.

and i was clear, I ment what i said 3gb by 2 slots 3 x 2 or 3 + 3, but as you just said there isnt a 3gb Which i didnt think of.

so i must of just swapped the 2 with the two. which still wont help me any.... because now if i swap them properly.. the lenovo will only have 4gb.. anyone know where to get really cheap 204pin so-dim?

Where do you live?
Does the Toshiba has Win 64 bits? Windows 32 bits can only deal with 3.2G

My suggestion is to buy a memory match pair (4+4) so it will have same specs.
Even if the same speed and type, is important to have same chipsets and timings (latency etc)
The Toshiba has DDR3 SDRAM 1066 MHz. You can use a DDR3 SDRAM with higher speeds but not lower.

I appreceate the suggestion but i was looking for a cheap solution, hence robbing one pc for a boost to the other, even though that wont work now.. is there anything cheaper?

If you don't want to have problems with memory, don't mix types, even with same speed.
