Switch between audio output when video output changes

I have an ASUS sound card that has SPDIF out via HDMI and also the standard 3.5mm. I want it to either play from both at once or switch when I switch between displays. Is that possible?

Widows only allows one default audio playback device, at a time. If an HDMI cable is attached usually Windows will assign HDMI as the default automatically. Thus if I understand your question correctly you can't do what you want.

Actually, he can (unless I misunderstood the OP). I use a small program called Audio Output Switcher to redirect the audio from my 2.1 speaker system to my TV whenever VLC Media Player or Windows Media Player is running.

Actually, Audio Output Switcher can be set to do it automagically based on the program running. I have set on my desktop to switch the audio from my 2.1 speakers to my TV whenever VLC or WMC is running.

I thought about that already. The issue is that I want to listen on my monitor, too. The best I could come up with is the hotkey toggle method. Oh well.
