With these specs you aren't likely to get better performance since your computer isn't even designed for 7. It looks like you can upgrade to 2 gb of ram and that'll help but you have a weak processor designed for it's small size. This is a netbook and netbooks aren't designed for high performance out of the box. You add an OS that requires considerable more resources than XP and you can expect a performance decrease. An alternative would be to switch to a lightweight linux distribution and you might do ok with that. If you want to explore that option there are linux fans here who can help you with it.

If you want to get radical, you could install Elementary OS (Linux) on it. I did that on an old eMachines desktop, and it now runs respectably. Facebook is a bit slow, but everything else runs ok.

Elementary OS can be found here: https://elementary.io/

As Townsbg said above, you need to upgrade to 2GB of RAM. And install an SSD instead of your mechanical hard drive. Those two steps will help. But you aren't going to get decent performance unless you get a really lightweight OS. Windows 8.0 (not 8.1) ran well on my eMachines computer; but it is no longer supported by Microsoft, so I took it off. Elementary OS is the only other decent OS that runs well on that machine.

I use Samba to share my data drive with the other computers at my house and with my guest session in VMWare Workstation Player.
The biggest drawback on a Netbook (I have the Acer Aspire ONE Netbook) is that it's an 'Appliance' and not something that lends itself to hardware upgrades.

Mine came with 1.48GB of ram (maxed out) and a Toshiba MK1652GSX (160GB) SATA II hard drive.
The ram and HD are built in at the factory and are not user serviceable.

It came with Windows XP Home, SP3.

I backed up the original HD to an external hard drive and then installed Windows 7 Ultimate x86 on it.
The video provided by Win-7 was horrible, and there were a few other incompatibilities. So after fussing

with it for a while, I restored my XP backup and I'm perfectly happy with it as it is.

Of course the little Netbook is just like any other laptop PC, in that they always have tiny CPU's, limited RAM and fairly small mechanical hard drives.

But, with several after-market tweaks and some custom tuning, I can double the effective speed of the little guys. I did one such 'Tune-Up' on a guys laptop, on day while sitting at the bar, at the El Toreo Mexican restaurant. It took about ten minutes to complete the Tune-Up and the owner was ecstatic, as he told me, "WOW! It didn't run that fast when it was new." "I know, it's what I do!"

The details, of how I do my PC Tune-Up would take several pages to type out, so I won't do it here.
But one good place to start is to Uninstall every program you don't need. And then, disable every Service that you don't need running all the time.

I love my little Netbook, and I take her with me whenever I travel. Combined with a wifi mouse, she's a real jewel.

Cheers Mate!

1.48 gb of ram? That's an odd size. Yours (and the OP's) netbooks are barely designed for XP so upgrading them is a bad idea. Granted staying on XP isn't a much better idea so a very lightweight version of linux might be a good idea. I say that even though I'm not much of a linux fan. With low grade graphics, slow single core CPUs, very little ram, and a small hard drive they aren't designed for much at all except for their small size and low price. They probably aren't designed to last that long.

I agree with mrjimphelps and townsbg.
Install win 7 on that hardware was a bad idea.
Light Linux is the best choice as it's a better OS. I have Lubuntu on an old computer. It's great.
As the best software is the one you know how to use, reinstall Win xp.
