One method you can try is disabling explorer incase that's the cause for the problem...

Start an Administrative Command Prompt... Leave it open

Start Task Manager, Close Explorer.exe

View attachment 68470

Open the command prompt.

Change to the appropriate directory:
cd "%USERPROFILE%\Downloads" - ENTER

Delete the file:
del filename.mkv - ENTER

View attachment 68471

Oh yeah, almost forgot. Re-initialize explorer.exe by going back to Task Manager and clicking the File Menu > Add New Task (Run) and type in explorer.exe

View attachment 68476

In response to your task manager screenshot:

Holy Mother! How many extensions/add-ons do you have on firefox? It shouldn't be using 285K of memory! The screen shot below is firefox w/ 4 tabs open & a custom theme with 6 add-ons.

I have the same problem. It is a rmvb file
I tried your method but it say it cannot find the file

I am having the same problem since last 10 to 15 days. There are two video mkv files on my desktop and I cannot delete, copy , move it . Tried safe mode and unlocker but wasn't successful. My PC has been booted several times but with no result. I cannot invoke anything by right click context menu.
Any help would be highly appreciated,
akb

Well, i found a way, use alternate file manager, eg: free commander. End task explorer.exe, then use the file manager to delete. However the video file will be moved to your recycle bin. So now ur recycle bin cannot be emptied. Now you have to use ccleaner to clear your recycle bin (you need to end task the explorer.exe too).

After going through earlier posts - I downloaded KillBox. I could delete the file with the help of KillBox. Sevenforum.com is really helpful.
Thanks.

here is the fix.

Remove "Thumbnail View" on that particular folder containing the large file (a Blu Ray MKV Video File is the usual culprit) and select view List or Detail so the rich preview handler doesn't need to create the thumbnail, this may be a problem trying to change the thumbnail to list or detail when inside the folder, so, right click the folder before opening it , go properties and select Advanced Tab (windows 7) then under the popup titles advanced attributes, UNTICK the selected option saying {Allow Items contained in this folder to be indexed} this also helps.
