underclocking and undervolting?

Summer has come and my fx-8150's temps are getting quite high
I was wondering if undervolting and underclocking the CPU would lower the temps by a fair bit
and if it could damage the CPU or shorten its lifespan in any way.

I am trying to avoid getting a new heatsink and fan

Well really depends on the temperatures. I dont 100% recommend underclocking or undervolting as a cpu needs so much to actually run. That chip is used to running hot so I would check the temperatures by stressibg the cpu at the hottest part of the day

you should use core temp

also would be no point to undervolt or underclock

If you are running at stock you need to look at the following

#1 how well is the Heatsink mounted

#2 does it have decent paste /or have you tryed new thermal paste ?

#3 take heatsink and clean thouroughly -if mounted correctly

#4 If you are in fact overclock just set it back to default in the Bios

I wouldn't recommend undervolting underclocking anything if it has a stock speed

that should be what is run /could be adverse effects these aren't those old chipsets of 5 or 6 years ago

Also with that temp on prime it's either you have a bad mounted Heatsink or you need to get a better paste or cooling solution 80 c is way high

I don't even get near 53c on prime or IBT when running

Points to your cooling solution

BTW all 8 core chips max out at 61 c safe max temp you are above that by 20+

There shouldnt be any chip which reaches those temps with no overclock. Try removing and cleaning the heatsink. Seat it properly and then check the idles in the bios

Have your temps always been high? Something isn't making sense to me. Are you running the CPU at stock speeds/voltages? Is your system clean?

The temps have only recently been that high, round since the beggining of summer
It was quite cold at round 15-20 degrees idle during winter

and yes its at stock speeds and voltages

IMO, no CPU should overheat under a clean system. As long as your CPU doesn't reach 15 degrees Celsius or less below its Thermal Design Power, your CPU should be fine. If you are overheating at stock speeds, you may need to replace the thermal paste and clean your fan and heatsinks.

Personally, I think you may have other problems than Summer. I live in Florida and it gets pretty darn hot here. Yes, I'm overclocked and yes my temps go up, but not nearly that much. Of course in my opinion, what AMD and Intel send as stock coolers are not worth using. They will not cool anything. Get another cooler. Any aftermarket cooler would be better than the stock one. But if you have high temps and want to overclock, get the best you can afford.
