Unidentified Network No Internet Access

I am new to the forum but have read lots and lots of threads in my quest to solve my issue.

I am not terribly computer literate so please bare with me

I have a new Packard Bell running Windows 7 Home Premium. The tower has been replaced once as although I could initially connect wirelessly to the internet, it became more and more problematic. When the shop checked it they said it was dropping the connection and therefore swapped the tower (charging me for backing up my info to my hard drive) At the time I asked if could be a Windows 7 issue and I was told no.

The new tower connected to the internet for about 2 minutes before dropping the connection and since then I have had the little yellow warning triangle and "unidentified Network - No internet access" message although occasionally it does identify the network but still had no internet access.

Even when showing the unidentified network message, it still shows that the Wireless Network Connection 2 is connected to the home network.

I don't know what information you need, or how to get it but am willing to try ANYTHING you can suggest!

The other computers are all happily connected - I am using my netbook to try to find the answer to the issue.

I have not loaded any of my own info onto the new system as thought it best to sort the issue first. If I can't use the computer for the internet it is pointless me having it and I will return it to the shop!

wireless connections are always less reliable than wired

- does the machine have a wired network port (looks like an oversized phone jack)
- can you connect a network patch cable from the machine to your internet router/firewall/network switch? - does it work okay then?

just fyi - wireless networking fails when there is interference or poor signal - that's not something inside your machine, it is an environmental issue

Also check for any updated drivers for the wireless adapter as well as your wireless router. Interference is also a factor as ericjmail suggested.

If you can give me your router model number and version number I can check the Windows 7 compatablity chart.

Are any of your other machines using Windows 7?

Were there any Windows 7 updates for your eithernet driver on the packard bell computer?
I could also use the exact model number of the Packard Bell machine.

I don't think it is "interference" as such as I have seen that many people have had this problem.

However, I could possibly move the computer upstairs and see it it works on the wired connection.

I have a D-Link DSL 2640 R Router

My new computer is a Packard Bell ixtreme M3720

All other computers on the network are fine (and on Windows XP)

As I say, it is connected to the network - but not the internet. And when it briefly shows internet access I can't actually access any web pages.

All help gratefully received as I really am at the end of my tether with this!

What wireless security are you using on the Dlink router? WPA2 support using AES can cause issues. If you're using WPA2-PSK with AES try turning off the encryption (not permanently! Just to test). Also try TKIP as a test.

If you haven't kept the router up to date you should look at doing so.

If the router has any status screens or error/event logs, it'd be a good idea to give them a look as well.

It looks to me like I have WEP rather than WPA

Can't see any error/event logs although the Status Screen shows wireless as "connecting". I don't think this is particularly relevant as my netbook is connected quite happily on the wireless connection.

Not sure what TKIP is - sorry!

Have you tried using the Packard Bell Windows 7 update page. It does show support for your M3720 machine but you need to get there by clicking on support from this page> eligible | Packard Bell

Your D-link router shows support for the DSL-2640B but I can't seem to find anything about the DSL-2640R model, no Windows 7 support showing for the R model as yet. And there is a difference between the two apparently. The R version which is a UK version shows no Windows 7 support. Maybe you have the B version and don't realize it?

WEP? Old and not very secure.

A test to see if the encryption is causing the problem is to temporarily turn it off and see if the connection is stable. You'll need to do this on the router and the desktop. If it stabilizes, try WPA next. WPA or WPA2 is preferable to WEP anyway. If it becomes unstable again then the issue is most likely in the router since it's the older of the two devices. WEP, WPA and WPA2 are security mechanisms (encryption) for wireless connections. WEP is the oldest, followed by WPA then WPA2.

What wireless card is installed in the machine? even though the M3720 may run Win7, the wireless card itself since it's an accessory may have some issues.

Myabe it is a router issue then, although that doesn't explain why it is connected to the network but not the internet (or maybe it does!) The old tower that was replaced worked, albeit temperamentally, for three weeks before consistently showing the problem I now have.
I have downloaded the new drivers from the Packard Bell site (thanks) but it has made no difference.
Any other ideas?

Ok, I think this is what we tried with the old tower (well a friend did).
I will see if I can find some details of the wireless card.

Yes it does explain it perfectly actually, in fact your complaints are exactly the same as everyone else's with these types of problems. I can't seem to find anything about that R model router you have but there may also be some updates from the packard site that I linked too.

Thank you so much - I'm glad it is not just me with this issue.
I have downloaded all the updated drivers for Windows 7 applicable for my model PC but no change.
I have also updated the drivers through the update option on the PC.
I'm not sure what I should do next (although I will double check the router in case I have read a B for an R!)

Could you just clarify for me - would this be the cause of the issue considering I did have a connection at one point? And occasionally it connects?

It's a bit confusing because your model R I can't find info about anywhere but the model B does have Windows 7 support. So it's difficult for me to make a positive assumption about whether it's the router or not. I don't like telling anyone to purchase routers unless i'm pretty sure that is the problem. The R model isn't on that list as you can see, so we can only hope for the best.

And yes, beyond any shadow of a doubt your network problems mirror that of others with Windows 7 using incompatible hardware. This is a very very typical problem.
