I apologize in advance if I am creating a redundant post but I have done a lot of digging and still have not found a solution.

Symptoms: Initial symptoms began when I decided to give Win 8 a try. Immediately after the Windows 8 install my system would become unresponsive/freeze, but never had a BSOD. Mouse was still functional but unable to actually do anything. Forced me to power cycle the PC. I ran memory diagnostics and attempted to use the repair options built into the OS, but no resolution.

After trying to fix the Windows 8 freezing I decided to go back to Win-7 HP 64Bit. I performed a clean install keeping only personal files and the windows.old old folder. With the new install I ran all the needed updates in Update manager and updated all the drivers as needed. For the first couple days all was well and then the OS would freeze/hang/become unresponsive... required power cycling to reboot. As of late, the system would boot to log-in screen but would either freeze when I typed a character or moved the mouse. Other times it would hang after entering my password and never load the desktop. There have been times when I couldn't even boot to safe mode[with networking] or [cmd].

So today is throwing me for a loop because I am on the affected computer and all seems to be operating perfect... I am at a loss for understanding, why be broke for 1.5 - 2 weeks and now suddenly work like a charm?

I ran SFC and have errors that cannot be fixed automatically. Event viewer has a lot of friendly red icons and a few more mellow yellows.

So I am asking for help in resolving the issues that exist with my OS, hoping to learn and avoid installing the Backup image i have from late last year.

I can and will provide more information as needed but this should get us going in the right direction. Thanks in advance for your help.

Dylan

Hello and welcome Dylan mate just what were you doing going over to 8 or trying to rid a dual boot? cos it sounds like you have really dropped the proverbial spanner in the works.

So the clean install was that from a retail CD / DVD or a factory default because the latter would have been the best way to go IMHO.

If you did it with a CD / DVD then did you prepare the hard drive first?

Granted a fresh install, or using my system Image would be the quick and easy fix, but at this point I am wanting to learn. So I am ready to take notes from those who are willing to help...

Well thanks for the reply. The Navy has me working the over night shift so I can't provide any specific information about SFC results or Event viewer log entries. I do know most of the important issues and will provide any information that is deemed 'useful'.

As for my "upgrade" and downgrade process == I used the Anytime upgrade to go to Windows 8, no dual boot, no new partitions. When I started having issues with the 8 system I started doing a little more research and found nothing usefull (before I found this forum). I don't have any OEM install disks with the .iso for windows 7 so MS support allowed me to download and install 7 online... perhaps not the best method but I needed my PC back and went ahead anyway.

I rediscovered an old HDD with a system image so I have that as a last ditch effort to hopefully overcome these problems, so long as the problems are not hardware failure.

Rambling...

So in addition to fixing my OS I am taking the time to learn the in and outs of Windows 7. One of the main problems identified by SFC is the printui.dll.

Event viewer shows a significant number of cdrom error code: 7 entries. Is there anything I can do to manually repair the printui.dll or other files?

Well Dylan at the top of the list if you hit this Google the reference will open into a Word Document it has a lot of stuff in there that frankly I don't really know a lot about but it all seems to point to a printer issue.
Google

Now I saw recently that Windows 7 comes with HP drivers in it so if you are not using a HP printer then I don't think any harm will come to your machine by this dll being out of whack. But I have just had a quick look through my registry and I cannot find any reference to HP devices so I don't know what the go is there.

Now you say the machine is running ok so take a look in Control Panel in Devices and Printers and see what you have listed as in my pic .

If your machine continues to run ok then try this it will speed it up a fair but as long as you don't mind losing some "bling" http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/11728-optimize-windows-7-a.html?filter[2]=Performance Maintenance

Personally I would be tempted to get that image drive and get everything put on it from the machine drive on it that you want and just reinstall 7 but that is just me.
