I have shut-down my PC computer a little over 2 hours ago because updates had been downloaded. It has been hanging on update 2 of 5 for about 2 hours now, which is most unusual. I have no idea what this update relates too. How much longer should I give the update and then what action should be taken?

Difficult to say without knowing which update it is :(
Two hours would be OK if the update was Service Pack 1 - but not OK if it was a normal 'minor' update.
give it another hour or so, then you may have to crash it by holding the power button in for 5+ seconds, and hope it reboots OK.
Boot to Safe Mode first - then reboot to Normal Mode if that's OK.

Thanks.

I had already decided to do a crash and boot in safe mode. I have also run sfc /scannow- no violations. The PC operation seems to be unaffected fortunately. When I booted normally there was no configuration on windows startup. The updates show 8 important updates of which 5 were considered essential.

They are:

KB2656351
KB2742595
KB2468871
KB25333523
KB2600217

They are related to Microsoft Net Framework 4 client profile- 5 security updates, 3 updates and 1 hotfix. I am now going try again but install them manually.

Install them separately, with a reboot between each - install in DATE order, rather than KB order
