Well, it's time to say goodbye, I suppose, to my old MoBo and processor. It is 12 years old, after all, and it's served me well.

I'm ordering a new MoBo and Intel processor, memory, and a sink/fan, but I'm holding off buying a new drive at this point.

I tried installing Win10 over Win7 and it errored out after almost completing the installation for reasons I no longer recall -- it was a couple months ago when I last tried.

I'm hoping I can just install the old hard drive into the new system and then possibly try again to install Win10 over Win7. In the past I've had good luck with moving a hard drive from one machine to another, running the same OS, so I'm hoping the new machine will at least fire up running Win7. I have my doubts whether the Win10 over Win7 installation will work, but it's worth a try, I figure. The alternative is to do a fresh install, which obviously means I will have lost all data on Drive C. And then I get to reinstall dozens of programs, some of which have draconian copyright protection schemes, so I'm really not looking forward to dealing with that.

Recently I bought a license to Restoro, a sort of deep-cleanse product that helped some with my machine, but it still errors out when I try to install Win10 over Win7.

Any suggestions you might have on how I might resolve this issue would be helpful. If you need particulars, I guess I can try another install and record the error messages. If you think I'd be better off just biting the bullet and going with a clean install, I'd like to hear that as well.

I'm a musician and a composer, so this PC is used primarily as a digital audio workstation (DAW), so sound is king. I'm also a photographer, so I also make use of it for image processing. I find the ATI Radion on the MoBo to be perfectly adequate in this respect and the AOC 22" monitor to be respectable. It's about time for an upgrade, though.
Depends what machine you are moving to.

There are programs that can be used to adjust the os to new hardware, or you could use syprep.

But your new machine might need drivers that are not already in the existing filerepository of your win7 installation.

If you are going for a 570 board, the recommendation is to use Gigabyte or MSI for win7:
