Us Militiary -- Whar are Female Officers Called Sir

Hi there
I can never understand why in Films or other examples you see in the US Militiary do the lower ranks address FEMALE offices as Yes SIR etc.

Unless the US these days has only a SINGLE sex (knowing what some of their secret Labs are developing nowadays all future Babies might be created in a Lab so no "natural Procreation" needed and everything might in future be assexual) what's wrong in saying YES MA'AM to a female officer.

Saying 'MA'AM' as a response to a command doesn't imply "Sexual Harrasment" or is this just the US's "PC" brigade going stark raving BONKERS. (PC in this connotation doesn't have anything to do with computers BTW).

Having spent 6 years active duty in the USAF, I can assure you that ma'am is the proper way to address a female officer... You need to stop watching so much tv Jimbo... its effecting your credibility...

I've served 18 years (so far) in the US Navy and I can assure you this "Sir" crap when addressing a female officer is Hollywood crap. It grates my nerves when I hear that in a movie or TV show.

i came in '86-after lackland > chanute, ill. after chanute > 3 yrs @ elmendorf, ak > then 7 yrs at charleston, sc

Ah, Dobbins. Brings back memories. My old Calc teacher was a Army Reserve Blackhawk pilot and would go there bi weekly to train. She was always in a good mood and brought back some fun stories.

I have never heard a female referred to as "Yes Sir". It is always "Yes Ma'am".
