Anyone use one of these cables / adaptors? My impression compatibility issues are with the android versions not so much the phone model. I have a galaxy ace w/4.3.

I don't think it will work on Galaxy Ace. The feature is not supported I guess.

You were correct. I used a diagnostic app and the android version is ok but the phone does not support otg. Bummer, neat adaptor it was cheap.

I used the OTG cable with my Samsung Galaxy S3 while ago and the cable is still somewhere in the drawer.. it comes in very handy you can use any standard USB drive or attach a controller or a mouse and able to use mouse arrow and access anything in the phone with it heck it even supported my MadCatz Bluetooth PS3 controller with it and had no problems what so ever.. you can transfer your data from USB drives to phone and vice versa.
I say I got the cable for like $2 only and the functions it offers makes it nice and easy to go
