Using a PS3 controller on 7?

Hey I was wondering if anyone has managed to get the Dual Shock 3 working on Windows 7? I use the GameSaike Sixaxis Driver for my Windows Xp setup and it works great, everything I have read says it works fine with vista too. Sucks there is no official driver for it. Anyone have any luck getting it to work? Oh and I'm trying to do it wired as I do not have any bluetooth on the comp (I will get a bluetooth usb if I must but only if I KNOW that it will work). Im using Build 7000 btw.

If it works in Vista, try installing the drivers in Vista compatibility mode.

Thanks for the reply, I tried installing and running it in both xp and vista compatibility modes but to no avail. It is a shame as this is the first thing I've come across giving me problems, and the only games I'm playing, GTA4 and Fallout 3 run way better on 7 for me than XP (especially Fallout).

Does it refuse to install or it installs and then refuses to run?

Did you try "run as administrator" as well?

It's a pity it's not working for you. You can get away with using a mouse/keyboard in FO3, but GTA IV without a controller bites :(

Yes it installs, it even recognizes it in the Game Controllers as the "Playstation 3 Controller" just no response from any of the buttons. I have also run as administrator. Everything I've read says the driver won't work properly on 64 bit systems. Hopefully there is a fix somewhere. Sony needs to release an official driver already.

It's a good pad and it only cost me $25 from BigW but unfortunately I think Microsoft have gone back on there licensing agreement and now you can only get official controllers, that they want you to buy for $35+ or $70+ for a wireless, I think they were just jealous because theirs was so crap LOL.

Thanks man but it doesn't work. That is pretty cool though, being able to move the mouse and assign keyboard to your gamepad. The os isn't reading any of the button inputs on the controller let alone taking that and converting it to other commands. It is bookmarked for the future. :) Ive read that there are no drivers for this controller for any x64 system period. So for now it looks like Im out of luck.

lol, a couple of months ago I tried finding the wireless USB receiver for my controller. At all the stores I went to, they looked at me like I was making things up. I had to settle for a $50 wired official controller  At least that official wired controller is finitely better quality than the 360 wireless wheel I have that has sat unused for ages.... :p

That's unfortunate mate :(

Which drivers are you using?

I've tried to install the drivers from here Dualshock3 Windows Drivers Released - DCEmu Forums:: The Homebrew & Gaming Network :: PSP Dreamcast Nintendo DS Wii GP2X Xbox 360 GBA Gamecube PS2 Apple iPhone PS3 Wiz Pandora Forums but everytime I connect the controller windows automatically installs drivers that don't work. Then when I try and update them to these downloaded drivers it says that 'drivers are already up to date'.

Is there anyway to override this? It wont even let me cancel the installation of the drivers by windows...

Yes there may be a way to fix this!

All you need to do is disconnect the controller and go into Device Manager and click on View > Show Hidden Devices

That should let you see your Game controller in a greyed out (Disconnected) state.

If you can't see it, then close device manager, open a command prompt and type the following commands:

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 (Press Enter)

devmgmt.msc (Press Enter)

That should open Device manager again and try View >Show Hidden Devices again and this time you have to be able to see your controller somewhere!

Now, the point is, right click the disconnected controller and click on Uninstall, BUT you have to select the check box for Delete driver software.

That way, Windows sorta cleans the cached drivers and treats the controller as a new controller and asks you which drivers to install.

Also, If windows stubbornly installs the same old non-working drivers, then just update your drivers from device manage but choose Browse my computer > Let me pick and click on Have Disk and select the driver from where you have it stored on your computer!

Hope this helps!

Cheers!

I have installed a driver that works for win7 32bit (build 7100). I've made a Video, I'll upload it for you because it's not so easy as i thout first... :P
Windows 7 installs two drivers and not only one. And it is not so easy to update the drivers with your own because Windows thinks his drivers are better then the one you choose...
For those who can't wait for the Video:
Download the driver here: File Details-PS3-DualShock-3-Controller-Drivers-PlayStation-3 -
Let install Win7 the drivers for the controller (the controller will not work...)
Search the two drivers with the method from Drago1 and update the one that is NOT called something like "gamecontroller".
Click on "Search the Driver on Your Computer"
Click on "Select from a List of Drivers on the Computer"
Click on "Volume" (or something like that) and search the downloaded driver.
Everything should work fine (maybe you have to click the PS-Button first).
Maybe the name's are not really correct because my systemlanguage is German and not English... Sorry :P
Here a List which JoyKey is which Button on the Controller:
1-Select
2-L3
3-R3
4-Start
5-Up (DigiPad)
6-Right
7-Down
8-Left
9-L2
10-R2
11-L1
12-R1
13-Triangle
14-Circle
15-Cross
16-Square
17-PS-Button
18&19-nothing
Hope everything is clear and you can use all your PS3-Controller with Windows7 ;)

Managed to get this working on Win7 build 7100 32bit by using the files shared on Welcome to MotioninJoy.com and following the instructions. Tried the previous guides in this thread without any luck, and unfortunally havn't managed to open the video in IE, Opera, or Firefox.. Seems i cant find the correct plugin.

I was wondering what the results would be on this, I plugged my ps3 wireless controller into the usb the other day to charge the controller up it was completely dead, and I didn't feel like having to run my ps3 just to charge the controller seeing as my pc was already on.

7 Auto installed drivers, but I don't currently have games installed that would take advantage of a controller, when I do I should give this a shot seeing as it has a fix available.

Driecken, the thing is that the drivers that 7 auto-installs probably wont help you much.. Try going into your controlpanel, devices, rightclick on your ps3controller and see if any of the buttons work. They probably wont, but yes, there seems to be a variety of fixes now, one of them is bound to work.

I myself will enjoy my fixed controller with Final Fantasy 7 on LCD drinking a few beers in my couch.

solution..

Hey dude,
I was googleing around trying to fix the exact same problem (only with different drivers) and found this thread which im guessing like you didnt help at all. HOWEVER I have just figured out how to get it to work and its actually pretty simple. Now the drivers I'm using are from a site i dont really remember now as its been a while since i got them but try searching "ps3c drivers" or "ds3drv drivers" and you should find them. Once you do there should be one called ds3drv and one called ds3drv_dx_1.02, they both work only one of them is newer. Anyway once you have them plug in your control and go into device manager, find it in there under human interface devices, right click, select update driver software. Now the problem i originally had is that it wouldnt let me change the driver it automatically installs, to bypass this click browse driver software and then click choose from list and finally have disc. The rest is fairly simple, locate the driver (either one they both work) and install it, windows will now start telling you its unsigned and unrecommended and all that but i assure you its a completely legit driver ive used it on quite a few computers and it works absolutely fine. So install, restart and away you go!.
Hope that helped somewhat, message me if you have any trouble.
Jay.
P.S another great thing is since theres 2 different drivers you can use 2 controls, simply install the other driver to another control in the same way and it works awesomely for emulators and such. ;)

Possible way yo use PS3 controller

Hello, I think the method is thoroughly explained here.

The guide explains carefully the ways to use a PS3 controller in Windows 7, vista and xp.

Use PS3 Controller in Windows Wireless Bluetooth or Wired | krapman's blog

Using PS3 Controller in Windows (Wired) | krapman's blog

I have used my PS3 controller in Vista and it works perfectly fine with this guide. I just upgraded to Windows 7 few days ago and it works like a charm as well.
Currently the best method to use PS3 controller in Windows!! Try it!

The author wrote abt connecting via wired and wireless bluetooth. I'm using the bluetooth method and no problem with games. Playing SF4 :D
