Vaio bsod

Hi,

I have been getting repeated BSOD from my 6month old VAIO laptop. I have even resorted to a re-install of the system but it still keeps occuring.

I have copied the Problem Signature in the hope that it might assist someone to figure it out.

I'm running Win 7 Home Premium 64bit
Zone Alarm Extreme Security
MS Office 2010 64bit
Genie Timeline Professional Backup Software

And a whole load of other standard software - Firefox, Thunderbird, Gimp, etc..

Thanks for this.

I've uploaded the zip file as requested.

The Perfmon shows there is no AV on the machine - not true as I'm running Zone Alarm Extreme.

it also show a device error - not true as the printer mentioned is at home and I'm at work.

Win 7 Home Premium 64bit
Bought loaded onto my Sony Vaio VPCEB1S0E which was purchased in June 2010, always do the Windows update and VAIO updates.

Option 1 There is a work-around detailed here which I can neither verify or discount.
Option 2 Uninstall Zone Alarm and replace with Microsoft Security Essentials.
Make sure your Windows firewall is switched back on!

There are other drivers that need updating on your system but that should 100% stop your immediate BSOD worries.

Thanks for your suggestion, I was leaning ever so closly to dumping ZoneAlarm as I thought it might have something to do with it as Im also having problems with my main "house" machine (Dell XPS i5 1TB 4GB Ram, Win 7 Home Prem 64bit). This also has ZoneAlarm on it as you get threee machines in the licence.

I have a dread of too much Microsoft and would prefer to stay away from Windows Firewall and Security Essentials even though they are free.

I was going to jump to Webroot Internet Security Complete 2011 as my alternative to ZoneAlarm.

Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I hate messing around like this, and I was going to give my Father-in-Law the old House main PC which has the third licence on it. I'll hang back on the swap over of his kit till I get the BSOD.

I somehow had a feeling you'd purchased Zone Alarm hence I gave the work-around Link.

A lot of people swear by MSE as it's lightweight and very BSOD friendly.
I personally went back to Nod32 AV as it's what I'm used to and has never (yet) let me down. I got a single user 3 year licence for about £25 off Amazon recently, can't argue with that!
I've only ever used Windows firewall and the version in 7 is far superior to what I was used to with XP so I've never really bothered with Security suites.
Nod32, Windows firewall, Mbam, WinPatrol and a decent Hosts file do for me that well, I uninstalled Super-Anti Spyware as in six months it caught one tracking cookie.
I've never tried Webroot Security Suite so I can't comment, just say try it and see how it feels. I have used their scanner now and then though just to check up on my usual defences.

Do a Google along the longs of Windows 7 BSOD with Webroot Security Suite . See how many hits you get. That's my usual starting point
Going to stick my neck out and say, for now, avoid AVG, McAfee, Norton.

But this could lead to yet another whole debate on which is the best security program!!

Those are the obvious ones (to me) I've spotted.

Driver Install - Manual method

Download the driver and extract it to a folder
Open the Device Manager
Right click the relevant device.
Choose Update Driver Software.
Select Browse My Computer For Driver Software.
Select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
Select Have disk...
Select Browse..
Navigate to the extracted folder and double click on the .inf file
Hit OK, then Next, and it will then install.

Well I've killed Zone Alarm with 5 months licence remaining!

On my laptop I've put MSE and the Win 7 Firewall into operation.

On the House Main I've had a licence knocking around for Avira AntiVir Premium that had 50 days left on it for a single licence so I've pushed that back onto the machine and using Win 7 Firewall.

I'll let the landscape settle for a day or so before taking stock of what to do for all three machines.

AVG, Norton/Symantec and McAfee were never on my radar as I believe them to be so bloated and over engineered (not wishing to start an argument here for the wider audience).

We use all sorts of CheckPoint stuff at work without any problems at all (remote secure access et al), so I guess I can say that what works at a Corporate level and gives comfort does not necessarily transpose equally to Home users (again not wanting to start a bunfight here).

Thank you for your input to this cluster #@*$ of my own creation. A sane voice (not the only one) from the wilderness.
