Very fast computer, sometime hangs when starting a program / App

Hello,

I have a really fast computer for work, on windows 7 pro x64, SSDs, 32GBRAM

I have comodo as firewall and MSE as AV.


but sometimes, randomly, when I start a program like Notepad or vlc or mpc-hc,
or any program that usually start in less than 1 second,
sometimes the application will take 20 seconds if not more, to start.
(and if I click multiple time on it during the 20sec, of course multiple session of the app starts at the same time at the end of the 20sec)


I was wondering where to start searching...
didn't find anything on the event manager, no cpu spikes, everything else is working, I can continue to use the computer normally.
chkdsk done obviously.


I did multiple formatting, installing windows 7 on different SSD I have, but after month of working perfectly, this happens. every time I format and wait for few month and it happens again.
so it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue.


any idea what it could be or where should I search ?

Welcome to SevenForums!

It sounds like something is running and slowing things down. It could be your AV searching for definitions updates at set time periods, it could be that it is indexing if it is a new installation etc! It is difficult to tell.

[1] Does this only happen initially when you switch the computer on, or is it constant throughout the day?
[2] Have you installed any new hardware or software recently?
[3] Are there any restore points that you could try?
[4] Have you got WU set to automatic or manual?
[5] Could it be something getting loaded at startup that is causing the problem?

Run msconfig and have a look at services (hide MS services) and the startup programs. Any strange service or program?

As you use Comodo as a AV, is MS firewall disabled?
Comodo use to also have a AV. Is it disable. Two AV can conflict.

like I said : no comodo AV. MS FW disabled.
no funky startup program in msconfig.

I noticed the same thing, but with third party apps such as Palemoon. Looks like it's validating the app it's about to run. I also have apps that aren't recognized, and I'm always asked if I want to allow the app in question to write to the HD. It's a consistent behavior, however, and nothing you can do but wait for the app to start or the advisory to pop up to see if you still want it to run. If it's something that came with Windows, no delay.

The anti-virus may also have something to do with it, as Avast will periodically try to scan the CD and diskette drives. I thought it might have something to do with using a USB device to do the initial install, but it's definitely Avast doing it.
