Virgin Media 50MB

hi all virgin media just upgraded my broadband to "UP TO 50MB" but I downloaded a file last night that was 182MB and it took 2 hours and 15 minutes is that right ???? seems like dial up to me, I know it say's "up to" but was this slow? in the extreme or am I wrong here ???

Hi there .. That does seem very slow indeed .. I know at certain times your Download speed can be cut back .. Have you tested your Download speed though that is only a guide really .. If things do not improve i would complain ..

If it was a torrent file your isp may throttle the download, Or get out a magnifying glass and read the fine print maybe they are giving you 50 megabytes per hour

Was a MSI Live Update 6 download, PS definitely UPTO! 50MB maybe there version of UPTO is different to mine ?

although I do have a tp-link (tl-wdr4900) driver error in Devise Manager that's on-going but not fixed as yet

I have the same ISP as you Downloads are slower at night time .. But not as slow as you are experiencing ..

I have used MSI Afterburner for many years, even on my old 3Mb/s ADSL downloading from MSI Directly was exceptionally slow so I used to use guru3d to download it. Perhaps you're downloading the MSI updates from their servers in Japan and as such getting a slow connection?

Go to Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test and test your speed there, I would test to the recommended server AND to Namesco in London (Virgin Support told me to test to that server when I had an issue).

Post back what speeds you get

Hi there

Broadband speeds can depend on so many things -- the 50 mbs is only a GUIDE -- if there's a lot of contention it will; be less.

Further -- if the SERVER you are downloading stuff from is overloaded then your download will take longer -- your ISP connection cannot deliver data faster than it's being retrieved from the remote server. This fact is SO OBVIOUS but invariably never mentioned when slowish downloads are being discussed. If you are downloading from a torrent then you are dependent on the UPLOAD speed a lot of the peers / seeders have and uploads are almost invariably SIGNIFICANTLY slower than downloads --often by 10:1 ratio. Again you CANNOT download data faster than you can retrieve it in the first place !! (Unless you buffer it - and even then you need to store it first before downloading in a huge chunk so my premise is still true).

Your own PC might also have problems that will limit the download speed -- Wifi / Lan card not capable of that fast bit rate, slow HDD's for storing the download etc etc.

There are loads of ISP speed checkers around - use one of those on an unloaded system to check what you are receiving from the ISP -- any variance from that to the download you are getting will probably be due to load on the remote server.
