Volume Shadow Copy - Manual or Automatic Startup?

My new Windows 7 computer came with Volume Shadow Copy set to Manual Startup. This is seen when running the Services utility. When would one want Manual versus Automatic Startup?

I don't know if it would affect the following, but the Event Viewer has been flagging an occasional NTFS System error as shown below.

The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1. Event ID 55

I'm not convinced that this error is real but am trying to learn more. Running ChkDsk on the entire disk reveals no significant problems.

Volume Shadow Copy is set to Manual by default.

As far as the error, here is one thread I found you can look through.
Maybe the error is for a Backup drive, or Restore Points, or ... seems many things might cause this ...

Thanks for the help on both items.

I changed Volume Shadow Copy to Automatic yesterday and will restore to Manual.

It looks as though quite a few people have had the NTFS Event 55 error. I'll see if things change after Restore Points are eventually replaced with newer ones. That has solved the problem for at least a few people.

It also appears that update KB2823324 caused the problem but that update was later withdrawn and replaced.

At least you know it's not just your PC ...
