VPN disconnects after several hours, can't reconnect until PC reboot.

Hi, I registered here because I'm having a problem with VPN on Windows.

I started using a private VPN for video gaming in general since last month, but I've started running into a problem I cannot fix... my PC tends to disconnect from the VPN after a while (6~12 hours of use?) and I can't reconnect to any VPNs until I reboot my PC.

However.. my normal internet connection works fine... at least it seems to be OK.

When I try to reconnect to the VPN after I get dropped, I'm welcomed by this error:

I'm on Windows 7 64bit and I use the default windows VPN client... idk what's it called, it's what you setup in the network and sharing center.

I've tried the following things:
*restart network adapter
*diagnose the issue with windows 7 network diagnostics
*/flush DNS cache
*/release and /renew lease
*reset internet connection
*using a neighbor's internet connection and I'm still unable to connect to any VPN until PC reboot.

I cannot repair it through diagnostics.

Anyway, it's a problem on my end because I share the VPN with 2 other friends and they don't experience this problem... >_<

Bump. Still haven't found a solution, yet.

This may be related to a problem that i used to get when trying to reestablish a dropped vpn connection.

The vpn connection is actually made by a program called rasdial.exe I don't remember all of the specifics, but IIRC, when you try to establish a VPN connection rasdial.exe is called. It (Rasdial) checks with the network services to see if the connection can be made, and if so, it retries it. My problem seemed to be that the Network List Service never got notification that the VPN connection had been dropped, so rasdial then failed because it got message that the connection was already active.

To make a long story short(er), i got around this by the most part by shutting down and restarting the following network services.

Network Connections
Network List Service
Network Location awareness.


This worked most of the time, but is an ugly solution that (temporarily) broke network access during the service restart. Eventually, I ended up setting a vpn from router to router and bypassed the windows vpn system altogher.

My VPN connection dropped 1 hour ago, so I tried what you suggested.

These couldn't be shut down:
Network List Service
Network Location awareness

It denied me because it said some processes relied on them. Should I just close those processes and try again?

I'll see about trying this again next time my VPN connectivity dies again.

I looked back to see how I actually did it. I issued the following commands in a batch file (run with administrative privileges).

net stop netprofm
net start netprofm
rasdial <connectionName> <userid> <password> /domain:<domainname>

Replace <...> with your own values


Note - net stop netprofm stops the net list service cleanly ...

Thank you for your reply, it's appreciated. I tried it via batch file and manually doing it through command prompt with no luck. Here's a pic of it manually typed in command prompt;

Batch file doesn't show an error-- I guess it auto closes after the rasdial command is completed. Both methods failed to connect.

Got any ideas as to why this isn't working? I don't mind having to restart my PC every 12~15 hours, but it'd be nice if there's any other way to avoid it because my PC isn't very fast at booting up. >_<

Setting up the VPN through my router wouldn't be a good idea because I don't live alone and the server I use can't access some websites.

Ok - your problem seems to be different than the one I had. You are getting the same error (619) after restarting the services so this is not the problem.

I assume you are trying to set up a pptp vpn. If so, please check that your firewalls (modem/router and windows) are allowing TCP port 1723 and GRE protocol 47 through (pptp passthrough is enabled in your router). As a test, try disabling your firewalls and see if you can reconnect.
