Waiting For Background Process(es) To Close

..at least I think that's what I seemingly always get on my darkening screen when shutting down Windows 7 and I find it rather annoying. Isn't it stating the obvious?
If it lists the processes, which isn't always the case, it doesn't usually give me a chance to close them anyway as the shutdown process is ongoing.
Is there a way to disable that?

Hi Peter,

Did you close anything that you had running before you shutdown the computer?

You might see if this tutorial can help speed up the shutdown time for you. If not, then you can create a shutdown shortcut in this tutorial to force a faster shutdown until you find the culprit that is not shutting down gracefully.

Before you shutdown, look in the Processes and Applications tabs in Task Manager to see if anything in there may stand out to that may be the culprit. You can test and see by killing the process or application before shutting down to see if it shutsdown ok without it running.

Thanks, I'll look into it in a bit more detail. It doesn't always happen. Maybe it's something I just shut down and it hasn't actually fully finished doing it before I tell the machine to reboot.

I managed to catch what it said before it shut down...the trouble is it's on a black screen so difficult to read and only up for a moment, so obviously isn't a real problem.

It says xerox scanner template is trying to close....God only know what that is as I don't use any Xerox product and I, as far as I know anyway, have no Xerox templates. Tried searching and nothing.

if so, same problem here with 7100... havent gotten my 27 configured to see if its still the case yet

I have taskhost but not sure what you mean by that.

I did however find something in my msconfig startup...weird, what the heck is it?

It looks like it may be a driver for a Xerox printer or scanner.

I'll try and be a little more descriptive Brit... when shutting down... screen darkens, naturally... then there is the "box" in the middle of processes shutting down, right? and the box most time 9/10 doesnt show any processes running, correct? well, i have seen that 1 out of 10 times, the taskhost.exe is trying to shutdown properly and.... takes forever sometimes... thats my only explanation... but sorry, i have no found fix yet for it.

edit: to also explain... the other 9 of 10 times, the hangtime is the same or abouts as when the 1 time that shows the taskhost.exe... so this is who my culprit seems to be, and taking my blame atleast

Yes, sorry. I was looking originally in my All Programs/Startup list.

I have a Canon printer/scanner/fax and nothing remotely resembling anything "Xerox".

The strange thing is when I search for anything "Xerox", nothing turns up.

Ah, now I understand. Yes that's exactly what I get, sometimes as you said.

well, atleast i know i'm not alone and its just my lonely one world crazy pc configuration setup.... the conspiracy theory

its a bugger Brit, and tbh i havent gotten around to sussing it just yet, I just try to not reboot as much as possible, hehe... sad but... maybe try an upgrade ti 27, with a backup? I'm about to wipe 7100 off and start a new with the 27, and probably, foregoing any catastrophes and stick with it, as it seems pretty stable as compared to the 7000 imo.

just to add some worthy info... i have a lexmark and a kodak on the network, but i dont think that is it, could be, but my nugget tells me its something simpler than that even. I want to blame a gadget, but i dont think i can, yet anyways, tho it could be that or something as trivial as such. I've been down the list of startup, repairing startup, so on and so on. no good. and thats about my length of dedicated time to it, just decided to not reboot unless needed, which isnt a big deal anywho for me.

LOL. Some parts of Windows & its inner workings will always remain a mystery to me. They simply defy logic.
Anyway, it's still disabled and I've rebooted 6 times. The last boot started up with a popup Windows Image Aquisition has stopped working, send error report? So I did.
Maybe it had something to do with that.

I was having a curious problem with Win 7 message stating "Waiting For Background Process(es) To Close ". I did all the normal techie things like, disabling startup processes one by one, changing shutdown settings (Wait To Kill Timeout) etc. Then when I went to fix a printing problem on a Lexmark wireless downstairs, I discovered the AC plug had been unplugged. When the printer reconnected to my network I later noticed that my "Waiting For Background Process(es) To Close " issue had not re-occured. Shazzam, since Windows 7 wasn't getting a disconnect message from the unplugged printer, it must've been re-trying to confirm log-off, thus slowing shut-down. Go figure.

Thnx Ex_Brit. I stumble dupon this thread juz now, otherwise would have started a new thread with this same issue. From the usage of Win 7, I was also bugged upon this issue till now. Here is my case,
I have 2 heavy applications always open during daytime. Outlook and FF. Before shutdown or restart, I close them, but FF takes some time to close. At this moment I get the same above message but it will nt list wat process is running. Strange. What I do is, click on force restart and then click on yes.

Sometimes if my explorer is opened, I get it listed. Sometimes for Outlook too. But strangely, eventhough there are no applications open, I get this screen and message by default.

When goin thru the above post, I was thinking whether the network printer I have connected to my lappy is causing the problem. Because, back in home I havent seen this screen. Also a extra note, I am connected in a Domain.

I have to do that same forced shut down sometimes. Not always....weird. Event Viewer may have clues, haven't really had time to check.

This Really Mysterious "Xerox Scanner Template" almost 15 years later?

It's Jan. 14, 2024 and for the last 2 or 3 weeks when I go to shutdown my HP laptop that may be as old as the question that was asked back in 2009 and I still can't resolve, if Anyone can help me with it before my laptop Self-Destructs I'd Very Much appreciate it. The problem:

When I check out of every tab and close the lid of my laptop, which is the choice I selected for shutting it down, the prompt of needing to "close the program or task running in the background and Cancel the shutdown and close the program or task first" or similar wording appears for no more than 2 seconds. So I began video recording with my phone camera so I could capture it to read what is open because it flies by So Fast that I can neither read it OR Cancel it before it's gone and continues to shut off, I use my TV as a monitor for a bigger viewing screen. It shows, "Xerox Scanner Template deletion in progress" and then goes dark. It happens Every time I shutdown and is making my laptop run slower in every way after a few hours of using it and there is Nothing about any 'Xerox' showing in any configuration of the Task Manager and I have Nothing but a SONY TV connected to the laptop and Don't watch TV and have No Cable TV connection.

I have two other people using the same WiFi network and one has a HP Scanner and a Canon printer/fax combo and turned both off and disconnected them to try and help but Nothing will get rid of that, 'Xerox Scanner Template deletion' message. Was the issue from May 2009 regarding the same/similar issue with someone else Ever Solved? Please Help me if you can.
