Want to Transcode AVI's and MKV's to MP4's and stream (all on the fly)

I've got an ipad with an application that will play from DLNA servers including windows 7's media sharing. Only problem is, it will only play MP4 files.

I've been reading that windows 7 can transcode on the fly video files but I have been unable to figure out how to do this. All the posts just show how to turn on media sharing. I'd like to transcode everything (video) that gets streamed to mp4. That would allow me to play everything on my ipad.

Is this possible?

I've also heard there are 3rd party media streamers for windows which can do the same thing. If there is no native support in windows, can someone suggest a 3rd party streamer (preferrably free) that would do what I'm trying to do.

Nero Media Home and TVersity are propbably the two better 3rd party DLNA media streamers.
They both offer a free version, however, the ability to transocde on the fly is only in the paid versions of them.


What type of files do you have now? Container/Audio/Video?

Mp4 is just a container to hold the Audio and Video streams, so those streams will need to be compatable with your device as well.
Think of the MP4,AVI,MKV etc as piece of mail.
MP4 is the envelope. Whats inside the envelope (video and audio) can be a large variety of formats.


Depending what you have, (if the video and audio streams are compatable) you may be able to simple re-mux them (or put in a differnt envelope so to speak), and avoid recoding and quality loss.
Going this route, the free version of the streamers, or even Windows own may be all you need.

You can try something like MP4 Muxer, or YAMB.
Just add your video as the Video and Audio input, and it will make into a MP4.

If that will not help, or the streasm are not compatable, purchasing one of those that can transcode on the fly may be needed.
Or, recode to the videos to meet the requirements you need which may be a free route.
