Webcam undetected, is Unknown Device in Computer Management

Status
Logitec C160 Webcam (was operating under XP)
- moved to a Win 7 Premium PC
- Logitech Webcam Software doesn't detect Webcam
- Computer Management shows it as Unknown Device
- Webcam shows no sign of life (should it anyway?)

Steps Taken
- Checked compatibility (rated for XP , Vista, Win 7 and Win 8.1)
- Logitec sourced 160 lws251.exe installed (re downloaded/ re installed several times)
- Uninstalled Driver attempted Update (won't see drivers in Logitec install folder)
- Tried different USB ports
- Tested USB ports
- Consulted Logitec site (very helpful **cough)
- Followed these steps and repeated three times.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/165554-usb-driver-general-fix-problems.html
- Said some bad words

What I don't know
- Anything specific to Webcams (never used this one myself)
- Whether Logitec 160 lws251.exe actually includes drivers (must assume yes)

(original XP machine has had a melt down, so unavailable for cross checking)

I'm stumped any suggestions?

Cheers,
Legbiter

Cheers ShimSham,
There was a glimmer of hope, but quickly extinguished.

Webcam still undetected

Steps taken
Found Logitech C160 Driver listed under Management / Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Initially didn't install correctly, but then did Ok.
Uninstalled Imaging Device Drivers
Ran through General USB Fix again (Delete INFCACHE.1 etc)
Rebooting at the end of each stage

Progress
Logitech C160 shows under:
Universal Serial Bus controllers. (two seemingly identical entries)
Imaging Devices with yellow triangle warning and a "device cannot start code 10" Error Dialogue.

- These the entries appear and disappear as I plug/ unplug the Webcam

Closer though, at least some of it now knows something :)

It's possible the cam can't work on Win 7 as happened to me with a number of old cams

Except Logitech Compatibility states it is compatible with Win 7 and Win 8

There are also help requests for minor issues from C160 Users running Win 7, which means that they have functionality.

You don't state what kind of Dell laptop you have and would be good if you can complete your System Specs as much as possible. Does the laptop have a built in cam as well

Are you installing drivers for 7 64-bit? Have you tried on another system?

Hi townsbg
There is no option offered by Logitech, just "Windows 7 download".
***Just found this on Logitech site ". . The combined 32-bit and 64-bit lws200.exe installer . . .", so definitely covers both.

I did consider that, but given the Driver is from Logitech's own site, and they rate the Cam as compatible for Win 7 and Win 8, I presumed the one does both. The mechanics of that are outside my sphere of knowledge.

I don't have easy access to another Windows PC.
Unlikely to be a spontaneous issue with the webcam, it had been working faultlessly on the XP machine.
(That machine is non functional at present due to RAM issue).

Thanks for the link townsbg,
Over breakfast this morning I realised that I should re-search and possibly even start a new thread, because the parameters on this issue have moved significantly.

This post needs to remain as a path for others to follow.
But in essence I now have a different problem

- I now have the Webcam listing in Device Manager
- Code 10 Error has appeared and is the foremost issue.

I'll follow the process in your link.
It is similar to what I've been doing, but sometimes the devil is in the detail, and no more so than with computers. Chasing some of those related links too.
Cheers
