What does it mean when saving from a program causes BSOD?

Blue screen 0x00000024, ntfs.sys (SonicWall NetExtender?)

I have a pretty stable self-built computer, the specs of which are in my profile. Looking at my Event Viewer, I have had one critical error since July, and I think that may have been caused by a power failure in our house.

Yesterday, to allow remote access to my work computer, I installed SonicWall NetExtender. I remained logged in to my work computer for 4+ hours during that time, doing some simple Outlook email on it.

Today, I'd been logged in remotely for maybe 90 minutes, and when using Word (Word 2000 to be specific, don't laugh) on my local computer, I got a BSOD. I've attached the required debug file.

Some other information that may be relevant:

1. I've attached the information from BlueScreenView (how do I copy/paste the text from this so I can include it here, versus showing an image of the information?)

2. My version of SonicWall NetExtender, which I downloaded following instructions given to me by my office IT, is 6.0.191, dated 2012. Not sure if a 2-3-year-old version is the relevant and most current one.

Although I can't reflexively blame NetExtender for crashing my computer, the computer's stable history, and the fact that I just installed NetExtender less than 20 hours ago, makes me suspicious.

Comments/thoughts/tips?

Update.

In editing the same document, with Word 2000, that I was working on this morning, I again got a 0x00000024 bsod, and I attached the BlueScreenView properties from that.

I had remotely logged into my office computer hours before, then disconnected, although NetExtender was still active/running though not connected.

I had used the Windows tools > error checking to check the D drive, on which the file being edited resided, and it came up error-free.

I'm now going to do the same on my C drive, which is only two months old in the computer.

Wondering if this will make anyone think of any other suggestions?

I want to apologize in advance for double-posting and/or cross-posting the same problem.

http://www.sevenforums.com/bsod-hel...x00000024-ntfs-sys-sonicwall-netextender.html is an earlier post from today, describing how two times, when using Word 2000 (no, not a typo), as I saved a file, I got the same BSOD error.

I wrote that thread thinking that a recently-added program (SonicWall NetExtender) might have messed things up, but upon reflection, I don't think that's the problem.

I don't use Word 2000 much on my computer, except to read documents. I don't generally create or edit documents. But the fact is that three of the last times I edit/save/edit/save/edit/save/etc. in a Word session - twice today on the same document, and once in November with a different one - I got a BSOD, and certainly today it was a 0x00000024 both times, ntfs.sys-related.

The specific "trigger" for the crash was clicking on the little disk icon to save the document. As I'd release the mouse button, the screen would go black for a couple seconds, then the blue crash dump screen would take over.

Here are some facts:

  • Other than when my home has a power failure (rare), or as described above, I don't get BSODs on my computer.
  • There is no evidence from the event viewer, or from audible sounds, that my hard drives are failing
  • I have a C OS/program drive installed two months ago, and two software-mirrored data drives, D and F, installed about four years ago when the computer was built
  • Today I ran the check disk (files and sectors) for errors Windows software from the profile > tools menu on C, D, and F. Each checked out cleanly, including my reading the logs from the event viewer.
So what's going on?

It sounds like the vaudeville joke about "doc, it hurts when I do this" - if I want to avoid BSODs, I guess I should just avoid using Word. Or avoid saving every few minutes in Word, although of course my dread of the program crashing causes me to save more times and more often.

Using google, I couldn't find any instances of a problem similar to this, where an otherwise-sound computer crashes if and only if a single identifiable seemingly safe act is performed - in this case, manually saving a Word document every couple minutes.

Suggestions?

I'm only linking to my other posting, in the BSOD forum, to provide more background, and in case anyone here cares to interpret the crash dump results.

I'm hoping though that the solution is more simple and tame, even if that means uninstalling and then reinstalling my Word or Office 2000.
