What Happens When You Close the Lid on a Laptop?

I feel like I’m asking if the fridge light goes out when you close the door, but what happens when you close the lid on a laptop?

I’m totally new to laptops, recently getting my first, and assumed you put the thing to sleep when you close the lid. But, long after I closed the lid, I noticed that the Wi-Fi light on my router was still in use.

So you can crunch the proverbial spreadsheet (or render a movie or the like), close the lid to turn off the screen, and it keeps crunching along??

What the laptop does when the lid is closed depends upon what the power setting are. You have to go into the power settings to find out for sure.

Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does

When I close the lid options

  • Do nothing
  • Sleep
  • Hibernate

If you are slow and careful. Shutting the lid should by defult turn off the display. But like mentioned, most of what happens when you do close the lid is dictated by the Power Options.

Just go to the bottom left and click the start orb on the bottom. In the search box begin typing Power Options. Consequently, you can right click the Power Options icon in the Control Panel and create a shortcut on the desktop for quick access if you find yourself needing to go there all the time. Or just do that for the whole of the Control Panel icon by right clicking the Control Panel icon in the start menu and chose COPY. Now simply right click the desktop and select Paste shortcut in the right click context menu. You can't right click and create a shortcut from the power options icon in the start menu because its a snap-in (I think that's the right word). Only from the Control Panel. See attached snaps.

Lots of good tips, thanks Everyone. Brink, I almost missed your link as my eyes are trained to skip of advertisements, which your link isn’t.

Found out a lot of good things, like you can use the Power button to put the machine to sleep, too. I see an advantage for ’Do Nothing’ when plugged in so I can run stuff in the background and turn off the monitor by closing the lid.

Managed to get Control Panel on the Task Bar.

Closing the lid “slow and careful” answers why sometimes when I open it, it’s right where I was, and other times I get the logon screen.

Yes, it’s Win 11; never had Win 10 as I’m still running Win 7 on both desktops. The good news is I might not have to update my wife’s computer as all of a sudden she likes laptops.

**** However, even when put it to Sleep manually, I’ve noticed that the router’s Wi-Fi activity still goes nuts. So something is still going on when it’s “asleep”; checking for updates maybe?

If I shut the unit down, there is no router activity on Wi-Fi.

Thanks again.
.

PS: I know even less about networking. Since the days of floppies, my networking has only been by 'Sneaker-net' between my desktops. I'm beginning to see more uses for the laptop, like light photo and video editing, so networking might be a handy idea. (I have many terabytes of data in my desktop...)

So, since I have a mix of OSes (Win 7 Pro & Home, and now Win 11) should I post a thread on it here, or over on the Eleven Forum??

If this is a new model of laptop, then it may well support Modern Standby rather than the older conventional sleep state. In modern Standby by default it is still connected to the network.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 Modern Standby (Modern Standby) expands the Windows 8.1 Connected Standby power model. Connected Standby, and consequently Modern Standby, enable an instant on / instant off user experience, similar to smartphone power models. Just like the phone, the S0 low power idle model enables the system to stay connected to the network while in a low power mode.
Check if Modern Standby is Supported in Windows 11 | Windows 11 Forum

You can disable Modern Standby's network connectivity.

I also have W7 Pro on my System Two, and several W7 Hyper-V VMs. My other machines run Windows 10/11. Their specs are in my Ten Forums & Eleven Forum profiles.

More Good Tips!! Thanks! The 'modern standby' sure explains a lot of what's been gong on. More decisions to make, LOL.
