What is a good e-mail to replace Windows Live 2012.

You're right Strollin. WLM will continue to work for POP and IMAP. I think the only reason MS said it wouldn't work was because they just don't want to support the program in future.

They could have easily mentioned in their email about setting the accounts up as POP or IMAP, and included a link to this page:

https://support.office.com/en-us/ar...mail-app-73f3b178-0009-41ae-aab1-87b80fa94970

The only reason I switched was because I found the IMAP options in WLM a little limited. I did notice a few issues with my sent emails not syncing properly even after changing various settings, so I chose to switch to another.

Originally went with TB and then switched to Fossamail. There isn't much difference between the two as FM is a fork of TB anyway. I didn't really notice much difference, except for the fact that FM seemed a lot lighter on resources on my system.

I saw a huge difference between Thunderbird and Fossamail. Fossamail downloaded all my emails in my Inbox from the server but then didn't mark them as read or not, they were all marked as unread so I had to manually mark them as read. In addition, Thunderbird automatically downloaded and populated all my folders whereas in Fossamail, I couldn't even find an option to have it download my folders, I would have had to manually recreate my folder structure. Once the folder structure was recreated, I'm not sure if Fossamail would then download the emails I have saved in those folders.

Built my first computer (8Mhz 8088cpu, 640K RAM, 20MB HDD, 2 360K floppy drives) in 1985 and have been building them for myself, relatives and friends ever since.
I saw a huge difference between Thunderbird and Fossamail. Fossamail downloaded all my emails in my Inbox from the server but then didn't mark them as read or not, they were all marked as unread so I had to manually mark them as read. Strange, I haven't experienced any of those issues. Mine just worked straight away and I've set it up on 3 PC's and it's worked fine on all of them. It worked exactly the same as TB for me. All my Hotmail and my Gmail accounts sync fine.

Which accounts were you using?

I'm still using WLM 2012 as it still works fine for me. I use it configured POP3 from multiple computers and have never had issues with that. MS said that WLM 2012 would stop working after the end of June 2016 but so far it's still going strong.

I have tried many of the suggested email clients. I don't care for the MS suggestion of the mail client that comes with Win 10 and also didn't care for eM Client or Fossamail. I've used Thunderbird in the past and like it so will probably switch to TB when and if WLM stops working for me.

Isn't the only problem with WLM 2012 supposed to be incompatibility with Outlook/Hotmail etc emails? I access those through my browser (Chrome) and actually still use WLM 2011 for my ISP's email account as that still works fine. I know it no longer receives any updates but then it never did anyway so far as I can recall and security-wise it's the anti-virus software that matters, isn't it?

To an extent. It depends what security you have and how it is configured. Anyway what you are intersted in is email attachments and links.

RE: Attachments. You need to set file extensions to "always show" and need to recognize suspicious attacments. Office documents with macros enabled.

Windows doesn’t show file extensions by default. So a file called document.txt.js shows up as the altogether more believable document.txt. If you open it the script runs and may not be blocked by security software.

Personally I set file associations so that .js files open in notepad by default rather than WSH.

Here is a list of extensions that you should be suspicious of if the file arrives via an email attachment.

Code:
.ace, .arj , .application , .bat , .cmd , .com , .cpl , .dll , .docm , .dotm , .exe , .gadget , .hta , .inf , .jar , .js , .jse , .lnk , .mdb , .mde , .msc , .msh , .msi , .msp , .pif , .potm , .ppam , .ppsm , .pptm , .ps , .ps1 , .ps2 , .psc , .reg , .scf , .scr , .shs , .sldm , .vb , .vbe , .vbs , .ws , .wsc , .wsf , .wsh , .xlam , .xlsm , .xltm

I actually use application whitelisting software that doesn't allow anything new to run no matter how it arrives until it's been scanned and authorised by me.

Also consider what happens if you try to open an attachment and the antivirus scan fails. The attachment still opens right? Because that's how Windows 7 is configured by default.

See: Notify Antivirus Programs when Opening Attachments

If you do not configure this policy Windows does not call the registered antivirus programs when file attachments are opened.

Thanks Callender.

I have two separate home desktop machines and don't have any email accounts setup on my mobile phone. I use MSE for anti-virus with twice-weekly or so manual scans with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free (I'm still on 1.75 and should probably upgrade to 2. but have never had any problems while 2. has often seemed to be still in beta in all but name). I also have Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit running. The guide you linked relates solely to Group Policy which isn't available to me as I have Windows 7 Home Edition.

EDIT: My understanding is that it's no longer considered necessary to scan the emails themselves, merely to scan their attachments if and when they're opened, and that is done by MSE. If in any doubt about an attachment then (assuming I don't simply delete it) I always do a manual scan on it with both MSE and MBAM.

A previous poster asked about the differences between Gmail and eM Client [let's include T-bird]. Let me mention just one:
Gmail leaves email on Gmail servers. eM Client, Thunderbird, downloads the server emails onto one's hard-drive; these can be set to delete or leave server contents.
I'm not sure this is completely accurate. Gmail can be set up the same way.
RogerR, you're right as rain, I was giving the overly simplistic explanation which when considering not only POP3 but also considering IMAP operation -- falls a bit short of being entirely correct; reminds me of Independence Day..."That's not entirely correct, Mr. President." [There was indeed an Area 51 - in that movie.]

THANKS everybody.

I'm starting to use eM Client, FREE VERSION. So far, so good. I imported the 2 accounts I had into eM Client and had no troubled doing it. One account seems to hang up a bit but it eventually downloads my e-mail.

I was able to import all my achieved mail from Windows Live 2012, which was the main factor in choosing eM Client.

I assume I will be able to use this program in my other 2 computers later on for FREE.

Does anyone using it know about the charge for updating to improved versions in the future?

Is anyone using the PAID version? Is it worth the cost?

I use WLM 2012 on both Win 7 and Win 10. No problems with my POP account (the only one I have on WLM).

I use Mailwasher Pro to filter e-mails. Eliminates the SPAM (or any other e-mail I don't want) before it gets to WLM.

Pricing structure is explained on the website:

eM Client | Best Email Client for Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 10

Pricing | Email client for Windows 8, 7, Vista, XP | eM Client

Buy lifetime upgrades | Get all updates | eM Client

There's also a TOU, but I don't see anything in it about "how long is "lifetime"?"...

The addition of real-time anti-exploit protection (in addition to anti-virus and anti-malware) might provide an additional layer.
I cannot speak for HitmanPro Alert, but MBAE Premium (Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Premium) can be configured to shield email clients (and essentially any internet-facing/vulnerable application).

Another layer can be provided by programs such as Mailwasher from Firetrust. I get precious little spam these days, but it does permit the user to "preview", filter and delete messages while they are still on the server, before they are ever downloaded onto the the local computer. The spam-filtering technology is quite robust (and better than that provided by most AVs). (Other features include spam reporting, as well as quick-forward, quick-reply and the ability to view messages from multiple ISP/webmail/Exchange accounts in one unified dashboard.) Free & paid versions available.

I've been using the pay-for, now the forever upgrade license, for some time now. The biggest advantage for me lifetime version upgrade [ :) I believe lifetime means either until eM Client company expires or I expire, whichever come first? :) , and I can easily create as many accounts as I want. At one time, I was watching around 10 small-church different accounts, copying or moving some emails from one account to another account. Now, I'm down to just my two accounts.
