What is the longest lasting hard drive? Your experiences?

Hi all,

I know this is commonly asked online, but I the threads I see aren't recently and are quite old.

I see some people say that hard drives can last for 10 years because they've had them on and running for 10 years.

According to some threads I've seen, HGST and Hitachi are long lasting, WD is OK, and seagate is awful.

But, I've seen a hard drive here:

It looks like a long lasting as well as I've seen it on some articles.

So my main question is:

What is the longest lasting hard drive, and where can I buy it?

Or if it's hard for you to answer that, please tell me what was the longest hard drive you've had?

I'm curious to see what you guys have had and the longest lasting ones. I'd like to buy one that's long lasting, new or used.

I've always had the best luck with just about any Western Digital drive. Every Seagate I've ever owned has bitten the dust except one 3 terabyte external. I have one WD 500GB that I've used continuously for almost 6 years now. I've heard very good press for the Mushkin drives too but haven't actually used one.

I have a Fujitsu 6 GB drive purchased in 1998 for Windows 98. It was in daily use until about 6 months ago. At that time it was working well and had no SMART warnings. Fujitsu sold it's hdd business to Toshiba in 2009.

Unfortunately the past reliability record of a particular product brand is often not a reliable indicator of the future reliability of that brand. Often an individual drive will last a long time out of pure luck and does not necessarily indicate it is a reliable product

I found this hard drive in my closet:

Has 48,418 hours of running time using CAM monitoring software (new vid on youtube about the software, cool stuff).

My other western digital has 51,349 of on time use. Wow, pretty amazing!

I also have a 1tb hard drive in my tower that has 1,704 hours of use, so not high yet.

How does this sound to you all:

I have the 40gb western digital black hard drive from 2005 as my primary in my older dell dimension e520 I got the other day from my grandma's friend and I see it has onboard RAID.

I'm thinking of getting 2 or 3 more of the 40gb black hard drives off of amazon for around 10 dollars each (5 dollars buy and 5 dollars shipping), that way I can do RAID. I know I can invest the money in a better PC, but I'm a fan of this older dell that's almost 10 years old, plus I think of this is a cool little fun experiment.

How does that sound to you all? Is it even possible to do it with 40gb hard drives?

40GB drives aren't very big when you get Windows installed on them. That only leaves about 20 to 22 GB for any program or data storage, and that will fill up quickly. You might just be wasting money with this experiment.

Mushkin's SSDs are great as well. I have one that compares very favorably to my Samsung 850 EVO and was half the price.

Yeah, that's true about space being taken up

I just aimed for the 40gb because they were the oldest sata hard drives I've seen as well as their excellent price.

And thanks for telling your experiences too! Glad to see that western digital isn't giving anyone major issues here considering how the hard drives in my room are mostly that (and seagate but I've seen so many bad things about them ugh).

Do any of you test your hard drives with a certain utility? I know some PC's are built with testing in the bios but one of my towers doesn't offer that. It would make sense that a program would be more accurate anyways.

The only program I use is Hard Disk Sentinel and I'm extremely happy with it. Gives all information needed and is pretty light resource-wise.

One is so old 8y.o. it has old system IDE I believe it's called connections from a x-p machine Hitachi same as another from an Vista machine but it has sata 6y.o.
Both used for back ups the sata for my Laptop system images

Not sure what is on the x-p hdd what ever is needs to be updated my older external died so I had to finally get another one with the older hdd connections.

O.T. You can get a small SSD drive now for under 40 bucks, so I highly recommend a Samsung for use as a boot and OS drive and then a WD for your programs and data.

I have a few old laptops from 2005 that were on top of my closet. I took my oldest one out and stuck in an IDE drive made in 2004 (hitachi i think it was)!

Currently installing XP to see how many running hours it has been running in it's life. So far my record one is 51k hours, but thats a desktop hard drive made in 2009. I'm trying to go back a bit more.

SSDs are more reliable, as they have no moving parts. More expensive per GB but a 100GB SSD is plenty large enough to contain just your OS. Makes for a very fast boot. Note: you may need to install your programs on a separate harddrive.

Yeah, I have a spare SSD as well, just plugged it into my computer and all is well so far.
