Symantec Endpoint is excellent and light on resources, there are versions for x86 and x64 versions of the W7 operating system. Unless you have any very special needs it's worth using the Windows native firewall in lieu of the Symantec one.

I'm using v12.0.122.192 and am adamant it catches far more than many rival products.

I want one that doesn't eat much ram or cpu. Basically no lag on the laptop. I only have 1gb of ram running on windows 7

Well, I pretty much do the same things on line as you and I find the Win7 firewall along with MSE works nicely on my laptop as well as the desktops.

If you don't mind using a selection of different programs to do the same job, you can find free programs that will perform very well.
There's a lot listed here: FREE Great Programs for Windows 7

You get what you pay for, but still need to be careful not to buy crap.

Refer to trusted virus suite comparison tables on popular websites and don't for one minute believe anyone that tells you a freeware product can seriously compete with one of the top notch paid for ones.

NOD32 isn't bad on detections, but there are some other issues with it.

Kaspersky ranks up there nicely.

I made another recommendation earlier in the thread.

The number of times I've heard people say they've scanned their system and it's clean, only to find that the definition of 'clean' actually means that their el-cheapo freeware virus client is simply incapable of identifying nasties!

Just the fact that you do "a lot of downloading" and "a lot of browsing" tells me you need something that can check the reputation of any exe you and has excellent protection against drive-by attacks .. try NIS2010

Here is an example on reputation on a just released build of Winzip 14.0 showing a Good reputation.

Here is another example of a brand new piece of malware for which there are no signatures yet.

I'm now absolutely sold on MSE. I just had the e-mail exploit test files mailed to me from here Email Anti Virus and Security Testing Zone and wham, bam, thank you ma'am, MSE caught and killed each and every one.

and I did all the eicar tests as well.

Based on that, and what I've read from users and pro reviewers, I'm sticking with MSE.
