why cant I play music in chat rooms

I recently purchased a compaq and had the 7.1 PCI Sound Card installed..Rocketfish..I can hear music in alll chat but my music cant be heard.. Is there a setting im overlooking.. Thank you for your time

Sound seems to be one area in which 7 is behind what XP was. Look for something under your recording devices called stereo mix. There's a myriad of threads on the Internet about this. It seems like stereo mix is disabled on some vendor's machines. Even when and if you can find it and make it work it is awfully hard to get the levels set right so there is not howling and feedback.

Virtual Audio Cable is a solution. You can download a trial. It costs 20 or 30 $ to get rid of the female voice saying trial in the background. It is better than the many I hear that just shrug and hope their mic can pick up the music from their speakers and have it sound ok.
