Will Windows 7 be offered on USB drives?

I wonder how much does the DVD packaging for each W7 DVD costs. Big plastic case, lots of dyed cardboard ... On the other hand, why not just hand out a plain flash drive? It already has its own case.

Retail security, advertising, harder to lose, easy to ship, I guess.

Think it is a good idea for MS to consider selling there OS's on thumbs. Some may prefer it over DVD's and others may find a thumb drive easier when installing, specially to a netbook. Most enthusiasts know the options on installing, but for those who have a netbook without a dvd drive to attach or another pc networked, then a thumb drive could be a viable choice. But I doubt there are many who have only a netbook with no DVD drive to attach. Personally if I had only a netbook, a DVD drive would be a necessity.

We are going down the same road with netbooks as we did with computers. People insist on more power from netbooks; from a Celeron M (90nm, 630 MHz) in the original netbook to Atoms (45nm, 1.66GHz, HT) in current netbooks. I have no issues with my Celeron M (@ 630 MHz from eeectl); it runs everything fine. 20 or so tabs open in Firefox with memory usage over 600 MB - no crashes, freezes, slow-downs, etc. Netbooks are limited by the screen size. Why so much processing power paired with such a screen? Don't get me wrong, the 8.9 inch LED backlight screen is beautiful, however I think ultimately the extra CPU cycles will be wasted. My desktop actually experiences more crashes, freeze-ups, and hard reboots.

BTW, my EEE 900 (burgundy) matches my car!

A quick check reveals 4 gb drives cost ~$10. MS can easily buy them for less (wholesale).

Nothing wrong with more power, I use my msi u100 in the truck for gps, music and video. With the gps program (garmin mobile pc) and media player playing mp3's (connected to the trucks stereo) its always around 70% cpu use. I'd much prefer not seeing it use that much, but it does run everything ok. No problems with refresh rates or music, so for the most part it is enough power, if I could run the above at around 50% cpu use, I'd be happier.

People use there PC's differently, thus the reason for so many variations in hardware performance options. Although making a cpu at 1.66 and 1.83 with no other difference seems a bit much. If they substantially increased the netbooks cpu power, I would update. The small size makes it perfect for the vehicle and it sits nicely on my center console. When I put my 15.4 laptop on the console, I can't open the console, with the netbook I can. I made a mount for it and attach it with velcro, so it won't slide around, but can be removed when needed. Otherwise it stays in the truck full time. Before owning the netbook, was using the laptop and made a slide mount under the passenger seat for it, but it was a pita! The netbook was the perfect size and obvious choice, but wouldn't mind if had more power. Guess it all depends on how one uses their pc as to how much power they need.

My Celeron 900 M runs @ over 60 C after an hour or so of use. Max was about 62, and then I shut it off.

How's your Atom?
