Win 7 Lockup on normal boot. psu and gfx card are new.

well this is interesting. I ran a chkdsk /r and went to bed. I woke up this morning and its fixed.....the computer is still in pieces but the basics are in it and working, I havent frozen for a good 30 minutes now. Im on the machine as I send this. Ive repaired a couple programs, browsed the internet. I really am at a loss. so it WAS the hard drive having a logic error i guess. I have ran chkdsk before but it didnt fix it, why did the chkdsk last night make the difference? i dunno but i wont argue.

i guess ill start putting the PCI cards back in now? try some gaming? lol. idk what i did. all i did last night was a chkdsk.

any ideas writh?

Yeah, put it all back together and see how it runs for a week to a month. If it starts having issues again within the next month, it's a pretty safe bet that it is a hard disk failing. Otherwise, it may have just been some bad sectors that needed to be set aside with recovering bad sectors. All hard drives end up with bad sectors after a while, so it is not always a mechanical failure that causes them. I just thought it might be given the extent of your issues.

yeah i guess. Thanks writh. Ill post back here i guess if any issues come up again, im keeping at least one of the new hard drives i bought just in case. the graphics card is back in and im going to try some stress tests on the machine. would a defrag move the data back onto the bad sectors of the disk?

Going to try playing sky rim, star trek, see if i can cause the problem again.

A defrag will not move data onto the bad sectors. The recover bad sectors re-allocates the disk so the good sectors are all that are seen by the computer when writing to the disk.

good to know. thanks again. if i start having issues do I post here on this thread or start a new one, i think posting here would make more sense as all the history of the problem and solutions are logged for visitors to see. :)

skyrim just ran fine. going to try star trek online.

EDIT
there are certain discrepancies in the OS and programs. some firefox features were not present and had to be reinstalled. certain settings were changed. kaspersky lost some data.

Bad sectors i guess?
Also i made a restore point for now as the computer is functioning normally once more.

Will do,

and star trek ran good too. the loading of the levels was a little slow...and not internet related. hmm. Ill keep pushing its buttons and see what happens. at the moment im manually backing up all files that I can. my dad doesnt like that the hard drive is intermittent he suggests returning the caviar blue and keeping the black and reinstalling windows anyway and using the samsung drive (problem one) as the dead weight drive. im considering all options. I have 14 days to return the hard drives with full refund. until the windows cd from dell gets here i cant do much except keep testing the computer.

Yeah, do what you can to test the hard drive once everything is backed up. If you have only 14 days, give it a week and see how things go and report back. I'd be worried about an intermittent hard drive, as well. I still have a feeling it is a mechanical issue due to how much trouble it was giving you. If so, it probably won't take long for it to start up again. A week is a good testing time for such issues, assuming you don't have anything that will interfere with you returning it in a week's time. If you're going out of town or something between now and then, you might want to consider your options a little more carefully.
