Window 7 - IE9 - Bank of America - Shopsafe doesn't work.

If you have a credit card with BofA you should be familiar with Shopsafe, a protective feature that gives you a temporary credit card number for a limited amount that can be used for online purchases to make sure that an online seller doesn't make unauthorized transactions.

To get to Shopsafe you log into your account on BofA's website and click on a little button that opens a window with several features that include Shopsafe. You click on Shopsafe and you get another window opening that allows you to get the temporary credit card number issued.

That's where the problem is. When I do that it instead sends me back to the log in screen where I end up in a loop.

Here's some history. I was given this computer in June by my son-in-law with a clean install of Windows 7 Professional 64 bit with IE9 64 bit edition.

From then on everything I did on the computer was from scratch.

Between June 19 and August 16 I successfully used Shopsafe 6 times. Worked fine just as it had always worked on my old computer.

After that I started having the loop effect. BofA's techs were unable to come up with an answer so their solution, use a different browser.

Well, Shopsafe works fine with Google Chrome but I prefer using IE9.

Shopsafe also works fine with my old Windows Vista - IE9 computer. But that's in another room, hooked up to my TV so not real convenient to go in there and generate credit card numbers.

have you tried with compatibility mode? It may work that way. If so, you can add the page to the list, or just click the compatibility icon each time.

Do you have two listings of IE? I have Internet Explorer (64-bit) and Internet Explorer. (Windows 7 Home Premium)
Does it work if you use the 32-bit version of IE?

Havoc - I just tried the 32 bit version of IE 9 - No luck.

A Guy - I tried compatibility view - No luck.

Keep in mind that this worked fine till the latter part of August.

And works with google chrome on same computer.

OK, shopsafe works in Safe Mode with Networking.

So I restarted my computer and went back to my internet settings.

Popup blocker was on but I made sure the BofA urls were in the exceptions that allowed popups. I also changed the specs to allow popups from secure sites.

No luck both ways.

Then I turned off popup blocker completely and went back to BofA and tried again. No luck. Still get the same loop back to the sign in page.

Keep those suggestions coming.

Something is conflicting, likely security or extension related. Try this

Start> In search box type Internet Explorer (No add-ons)> Enter

Now see if it works.

You could try restoring the default settings for IE, delete all cookies, history, cashed content, etc., if you haven't done so.

On my system there's a browser help object (BHO) from BofA:


*MBNA had been purchased by BofA and didn't bother changing the BHO much, at least not the name of the original publisher.

Some of A/V's and other security software may block access to this BHO silently and you could try disabling them for the time being. While the Windows firewall should not block communication with ShopSafe, you could disable it for testing.

And yes, I love the ShopSafe feature and use it all the time for shopping online. On my Windows 7 SP1 64-bit OS with IE9, it works just fine in both IE browsers. I still miss the MBNA's JAVA based app, that could enter the freshly generated CC# details into the website with one click.

There were some non-Microsoft services checked. Unchecked them, too. No luck.

I thought about my security apps. One of them was disabled during the clean start up and the problem did not resolve.

I had also installed Microsoft Security Essentials in September. I turned off Real Time Protection but the BofA issue persisted.

I was hoping to avoid resetting IE but I did it anyway and that didn't resolve the issue either.

How do I find whether I have that BHO or not?

Since it worked in safe mode with networking, something is definitely blocking it. Perhaps something in your HOSTs file, but more likely a security program. the easiest way to see what IE is running is with Winpatrol, or similar, but many/most have CCleaner. If you do Open CC> click on Tools> Startup> IE tab

You can delete BHO's manually, but they are often randomly named, and hard to identify:

I don't seem to have the BHO that CrOOzn mentioned:

Besides MSE, what active security do you have? Is Malwarebytes the free version used only for scanning, or the Pro version? What firewall do you use? Any active security I would try disabling one by one for a test. If you find one that's causing it, you might be able to add the site(s) to it's exclusion/whilelist. Safe mode does not load any security, while the clean start often cannot disable certain security products.

Make all the suggestions you want, no matter how far out. I'll try anything.

The only active security (other than MSE) is the Windows Firewall. I disabled it and tried Shopsafe again. No dice.

I had three anti spyware programs: Malwarebytes, Spybot, and Super AntiSpyware. I uninstalled all three just in case something was going on in the background. Tried Shopsafe again. Still no luck.

Frustrating.

I don't believe that this program would load in safe mode and may explain why ShopSafe works in safe mode. ShopSafe is a virtual card program and might be conflicting with the similar program from the Citi. You could disable this program in CCleaner from starting and see if that makes a difference. If not, you can change it back.

Good idea. But didn't work. I disabled that item. Didn't help. I had only installed the Citi application a couple of weeks ago. Before that I had been going online to Citi and doing the card number manually.

Oh, the BHOSSAFE.dll thing doesn't appear to be the issue. I don't have that file on my Vista computer either and Shopssafe works on that one.

Resetting IE9, while it's painful, it also eliminates IE preventing ShopSafe from working.

While there's a chance that BofA had changed their web application, it's unlikely in my mind. The app works on any of my my PCs, Windows 7 (32 and 64-bit) and Vista, and on yours in safe mode. That leaves your PC's software mix that had to have some changes, intended or unintended on or after August 16th.

It's still possible that one of the startup programs causing the conflict, even if the Citi's did not. Most if not all third-party programs do not load in safe mode, effectively allowing ShopSafe to work. You could try disabling them individually, or together in case of grouped startup programs is the issue, to see if it makes a difference. The Windows startup programs do not cause this issue, since they do load in safe mode.

Alternatively, you could check the content of the host file as suggested by A Guy. The file is in the "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc" folder by deafult. It's unlikely, but possible that there's a DNS redeirect for the ShopSafe site.

Something really bizarre just happened.

I went to Microsoft's Community Forum and ran a search for Bank of America and found dozens of posts where people were having trouble logging on to BofA with IE9 for the last two years.

Each post was replied to by somebody suggesting a solution. I tried each solution in turn. None of them worked or were applicable and each time I ended up looped back to the BofA sign on screen. Each time I would log off BofA, try another solution, end up looped back to the sign on screen.

After about a half dozen tries I figured I'd save a few steps and just go back to the my account screen but when I hit the browser's back arrow all of a sudden the sign on screen disappeared and Shopsafe activated and worked properly.

I thought I was hallucinating but have tried it several time and it still works.

Can't imagine why it does that, but I'm beyond caring, now that it works again.
