If you’re yet to try the Windows 10 Technical Preview but don’t know how to install it alongside your primary Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 system, or just aren’t sure on how to install the said Technical Preview from its ISO file, Microsoft would like to help you. The Windows software-maker has released tools to quickly and safely get those systems to the Windows 10 Technical Preview ahead of the preview build that is expected in January. The said tools will allow you to update your Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 system to the latest Windows 10 Technical Preview build via Windows Update in early 2015.

This sounds pretty good for those who have avoided 8 so far but are curious to get Windows 10 next year. Personally I'd rather do a clean install or simply just a VM run, but it's still good to have options

This could work well for those that want Update to take care of things. Personally, I decided to skip the Technical Preview and wait for what I hope will be a Consumer Preview in January then dual boot it with Win 7 to see how well it plays with the hardware/software in my box. If that goes well I may upgrade to 10 RTM with a clean install.

Hi there

Not sure of your remark about 32 bit only in a VM -- W10 runs perfectly as a 64 bit VM on VMWARE.

Note - on VMWARE workstation you can even run a 64 bit VM on a 32 Bit host provided the CPU supports the Virtualisation feature -- all modern CPU's made in the last 5 - 7 years do anyway.

I've had Windows 10 64 bit running as a VM on an XP Host -- the only restriction of course is that the maximum RAM you can give to both HOST + GUEST is 4GB - even here there are some exceptions such as using PAE where the 64 bit VM can get at addresses above the 4GB limit.

The W10 menu is quite customiseable --you can get rid of the tiles easily enough.

The latest official build is 9879 but build 9901 is out in the wild and has a few "interesting" features too -- I'm looking forward to the next official release.

From what I see it should be a fairly seamless transition from W7 to W10 - users won't have any difficulty using it - unlike the W8 fiasco.

Happy Xmas everyone - and give the computers a day or two REST !!!!!.

Cheers
jimbo

I running a W10 TP 64 bit VM on VMware Player (in Linux Mint 17.1 64 bit Host).

My VMware Workstation is too old to run a W10 VM.
It can't run W8 or most new Linux Distros as VMs either.

If I ever decide to upgrade, which I probably won't, this would be the most harmless (and I'm hoping the fastest) way to do it.

But the January build is still going to be a Techical Preview. Until the CP, I'm not interested all that much in 10 anymore and this time around I just don't care about testing it and feedback and everything.

Recently I realized I barely use my laptop for anything aside from web browsing and games. All my stuff is in the cloud: my docs and pictures are on OneDrive, I stream all my music from Spotify and AudioAddict's free streaming websites/apps; I can't remember the last time I wanted to watch a movie anyway cause I just watch whatever I find on YouTube, and if it wasn't for Steam and games, I'd pretty much be totally okay with something like a simple cloud OS.

Hi there

you can still run VMware player and a 32 bit virtual machine - no problems there. Mobos that don't have the VT feature from Intel (or equivalent from AMD) must almost be MUSEUM pieces by now -- perhaps you can be lucky enough to get someone to give you a nice new one as an Xmas "prezzie".

Cheers

Vm is possible with windows 7. I done it with windows 10 32 bit as well as windows 10 64 bit, but I prefer windows 7 and Linux with xfce4 desktop myself. After VM, I tried it for awhile on my actually hard drive, didn't much care for it. I got a little scared when the hard drives starting to fail on people who use windows 10 preview. That turned me off of testing the preview. The possibility of windows 10 being subscription will turn me off.
