What is the Universal Windows 7 method to do this ^(see title)^ regardless of hardware or drivers used?

Edit: Looking for default Windows method to control this function. (Registry or other)

The default on most is mute the speakers when headset is plugged in. Some sound hardware, such as Realtek, have options to mute the speakers when a headset is plugged in or not to mute the speakers.

Yes. true. Alas I knew that, that's why I was asking if anybody knew what the alternative is to the modern default behaviour, hence the question remains:

What "default"? Its a function of how the specific sound hardware and its software control (if it has one). e.g. with Realtek, the Realtek HD Audio Manager has this option.

Right so the "function" is normally an adjustable option when one has the specific hardware's software installed to control how it behaves.

However windows and the registry control should be able to do the same "function" if we are able to implement it our self.

By "default" I am extrapolating drivers only, thus function without software.
