Solved Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit on HP Pavilion P6597c BSOD + Hanging

I bought a refurbished Pavilion P6597c about 3 months ago; it was completely wiped and I loaded Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, installed a second western digital hard drive (1 TB), a Nvidia GT 610 (1 GB model) and a Asus Xonar DX sound card. I also installed a 600 watt Thermaltake power supply.

I had installed all critical updates, loaded the most current drivers available directly from HP and other manufacturers.

The system ran perfectly until about a week or so ago, when it started randomly hanging (not a BSOD but the system just locked up/froze), and quite a varietly of BSOD's.

I un- and re-installed drivers; tried different versions, tried switching to the onboard video (in case the card was failing), re-assured internal componests were properly seated, switched anti-virus from Avast to Panda (incase it was a program update conflicting), ran CPUID to make sure the power supply was functioning and that components were not over heating; ran Memtest 86 for half a day to check the ram, and ran Western Digitals Data Lifeguard to test the hard drives. tried sfc /scannow to check that windows files were not damaged/missing and ran TDSSKiller to check for hidden rootkits. Everything seemed perfectly fine.

...except the system still crashed randomly. The crashes/BSODs finally were getting so frequent that I could not load windows, it would hang constantly before even getting to the safe mode option (strangely enough safe mode never crashed). Windows finally corrupted from so many partial/inturrupted boots and unexpected shutdowns.

With Windows unloadable; I finally wiped the drive again and started new 4 days ago, and the problem is now re-emerging. Random crashes and BSODs are creeping back in with greater frequency. It took 20 minutes to get windows running just to make this post.

I am at a loss; I am usually good at diagnosing and repairing these sort of problems, but the BSODs give different errors, usually pointing to various hardware which then test perfectly.

Hopefully someone here can point me in the right direction because I am genuinely puzzled by this one. I made no changes to the system setup, but it went from running perfectly to barely functioning.

There are many indications of hard disk failure. Run the LONG tests of the DOS version of SeaTools on both WD disks and report the result:

Hello Golden, thank you for the reply!

I have just completed running Seatools for DOS on both drives, and the tests (short DST and Long Test) for both drives showed as 'Passed', no errors reported.

I also ran Western Digitals tests both quick and extended on each drive, both showed as passed as well.

I finally ran Windows built in error checking on the windows drive, set to test at boot and it found some file fragments (probably not unusual for a system that randomly locks up/BSOD's) but otherwise also reported no physical problems/bad sectors.

As far as I can tell, and as all testing seems to report, both drives do appear to be operating perfectly fine.

OK. Run these please and report results:

1. Click Start

2. In the search box, type cmd
3. In the list that appears, right-click on cmd.exe and choose Run as administrator
4. In the command window that opens, type chkdsk /R and hit enter.

You will be prompted whether you wish to schedule a chkdsk scan at next startup, type 'Y' and hit enter. Now restart your computer and chkdsk will automatically run.

Next:
1. Click Start

2. In the search box, type cmd
3. In the list that appears, right-click on cmd.exe and choose Run as administrator
4. In the command window that opens, type sfc /scannow and hit enter.

Report the output from the command window once it finishes.

I started with the 'chkdsk /R'

Stage 1 of 3: no errors

Stage 2 of 3: Data was flashing by so fast I had trouble reading it, but It seemed to consist of quite a lot (as in hundreds) of 'Sorting Error' and 'Correcting' messages. All seemed to be labeled $I30. This was followed by another long scrolling of many, many enteries of 'Deleting Index Entry' and 'Recovering Orpahaned File' messages.

Strangely enough, from the file name fragments it appears all these files seemd to be associated with Boinc's 'Rosetta@home' which I regularly run (or used to, before system freezes and BSOD's made the PC unuseable for any long period of time).

Stage 3 of 3: flashed by too quick to read, but I did catch '0 Bad Sectors'; so I imagine that was a pass.

End result was a 'Volume is Clean' message then a reboot back into windows.

the 'sfc /scannow' reported back 'Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity issues'.

As an aside, where did the chkdsk /r store all these recovered/orphaned file fragments? I certainly do not need a few hungred partials of old Rosetta@home work units, and I cannot find a folder on the windows drive containing it.

Well it has been 3 days, and no BSOD's. System is back to being solid as a rock.

Looks like it was something strange with Rosetta@home, where it was royally bolloxing up the drives data.
