Windows 7 is here in 2 days, and I'm on Ubuntu again :)

Ok, so I haven't totally ditched Windows 7...but considering how few problems I have had and the fact that I have been running it for quite some time on my home computer, I decided to start playing around with the new Ubuntu 9.10 Beta release on my work laptop.

Thus far, everything is going very smootly. Running Ubuntu 9.10 32-bit on my Dell E6400 laptop and about 30 minutes into it, the box is installed, patched, sound, Nvidia video and broadcom wireless is working. My IRC clients are setup, my Instant Messengers configured, my plug-ins for Firefox installed, video codecs and flash player installed. Movies are playing in VLC, MP3's play, I'm connected to my Windows shares. All of this without any cdkeys or activation. You gotta love that.

I know that most of us are die-hard Windows fanatics, but I know we have some Linux fans here as well. It's good stuff.

Yeah, I think it's 9 more days until it's officially out. I maintain a Comprehensive Setup guide for Ubuntu on a number of forums, so I usually start working on it a week or two out to try to get some of the new changes covered so that I can just do a run through with the final release and make sure all is working. Thus far, it's much the same as before....however I have had to rework a few things. (new file system by default = ext4, new grub (now grub2) and my cdripper of choice (grip) is no longer being maintained and has been removed from the distro....so now using rubyripper).

I also on Ubuntu 9.10, and running Ubunbtu since 7.04 I just love it, but in fact Im linked to Windows because of most of the programas I use.

I just love Ubunbtu 9.10 but I prefer KDE

i was playing around with a puppy live disc on a friends pc yesterday, as his xp wouldn't boot.

he was totally fed up with xp, so i talked him into trying out linux mint (which is heavily based on ubuntu, but comes with codecs and fonts etc) - again, the install well flawlessly, and my friend seems to be enjoying it so far...

Ubuntu since 7/04 ... It does whatever I throw at it, though its not for the faint of heart... You have to be willing to put some time and effort into getting it setup just the way you want it. The biggest problem I've had so far was editing the xorg.conf file, but once that was done, well, all I could do was say ... shi*z!!

Then I found Windows 7...

I've never had the stamina to stay with Linux too long. I guess I'm just too lazy to learn the language of a new 'console'.

It does tempt me from time to time to try anew, but I usually dissuade myself - I mean, what's the point in spending hours to set up a dual boot, configure this and that, for an OS I wanted to use just to see a minute of Compiz in action?

Linux is a livesaver sometimes though, there is that sweet miniature build that saves your ass when you lock yourself out from an account on a computer you rarely use, because you forgot the password..

The new version includes EXT4 as default file system (it's faster). Grub2 is now the bootloader system. The UbuntuOne client is built it (it's a dropbox style clone to sync data to the cloud). The instant messaging client is now Empathy..which replaced Pidgin. Finally, there is the kernel mode setting which allows the kernel to control the graphics at the console rather than an X11 driver.

Yeah, I found Windows 7 too. It's very nice. But sometimes...well....it's just Windows and works just like other versions of Windows and it's what everybody uses. Sometimes I enjoy the challenges of figuring out alternative ways of accomplishing the same tasks.

I agree, it's not worth the effort if that is all that you hope to get out of it. You can just watch a YouTube video if that is what you want to see.

For me, I've got multiple computers at home. My primary box for gaming and Windows is running Windows 7. My wife's laptop is on Vista and always stays that way since I've already paid for it and it works. My other machines often run Linux exclusively as I don't have to license them, activate them, etc.

With regards to my work laptop, I have to dual boot as I need Vista to do my job. So, I usually boot into Vista at work, but then at night when at home, i almost always boot into Linux and just use that. Since I often use my laptop as an internet appliance in the evenings, it's nice to surf with relative safety from all viruses, trojans, malware, spyware and the like. Plus, with far less stuff installed, the Linux box is just flat out faster to boot and operate than my Vista load. And my battery life seems quite excellent as well.

+1 I've already rad that, and isn't it supposed to be some HUGE speed improvements...? And i use Ubuntu 9.04(waiting for public release of 9.10) until i install it into my VM. I just use UBUNTU as like a cloud os ^^. I do understand the basics of its language the sudo apt... etc. etc. But i just like it because for some wierd reason Chrome(or Chromium) Developers x64 is amazingly speedy on it! So UBUNTU is internet... Win7 is games/typing/school work

not a lot of linux talk here, but anywho... I had 9.10 on pc's that are connected via wireless, they simply won't connect to networks even though they can see them. 9.04 still works like a charm, I use it to play quake live and what not. The only time I venture onto my 7 hard drive or partition on my gaming rig is if I cant get games or videos to work on linux. OR... if I'm trying to figure out if my BSOD issue is solved like I am now
