Hi. as the title says i keep getting this error whenever i try to install a fresh copy of windows 7.

it displays this error on the "installing updates" step

List of things i have tried:

  • Buning another dvd copy of windows
  • Enabling Sata insted of AHCI i think its called under BIOS
  • creating a bootable USB ISO of windows

The windows 7 iso works perfectly fine on 3 laptops i have reformated recently but on my own Dell xps 15 laptop it simply wont install it due to this error.

it previously had windows 8 which i have wiped out whilst formating the SSD hard drive.

Any suggestions?

All I can suggest is to make an image of one of the 3 laptops (take the one that is the closest to yours - in specification terms) and dump the image on the SSD. You may have to redo the activation with the key on the COA sticker which is on the bottom of your laptop. And do not forget to also image the 100MB system partition. That you need too.

Then when everything is rolling and you have the essential programs installed, take another image which you can use in case you ever need to reinstall again. For imaging I recommend free Macrium.

I doubt it is a problem with the .iso. It gets stuck with the updates. But then you never know.

The files are inside the ISO . So it's the ISO .

What you could do is use Diskpart to create the bootable USB Flash drive . Then copy the contents to the flash drive .

Tool: UltraIso

Download

To create the bootable USB drive . Open up a elevated command prompt and run Diskpart .

   Note
To open an Elevated command prompt . Click on :orb: type in CMD in the search box once CMD comes up under Programs (1) right click on CMD and choose Run as administrator
   Tip
You may also press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER then press ALT+Y to bypass the User Account Control Window

Type in
   Note
Don't forget to press Enter after all the commands. Enter the commands one at a time .

Code:
 DISKPART

Code:
 LIST DISK

Code:
 SELECT DISK #

   Note
# is the number of the USB . Some cases the USB drive is Disk 1

Code:
 CLEAN

   Note
The CLEAN command will wipe the USB flash Drive

Code:
 CREATE PRIMARY PARTITION

Code:
 SELECT PARTITION 1

Code:
 ACTIVE

Code:
 FORMAT FS=NTFS QUICK

Code:
 assign

   Note
The ASSIGN command will assign the Flash drive a letter .

Code:
 EXIT

Code:
 EXIT

   Note
The 2nd EXIT will close the command prompt
