Windows 7 WITHOUT SP1. No may updates on tuesday. Manual updates ok?

My folks PC has Windows 7 and since it has been working perfectly they chose NOT to install SP1 until absolutely required.

This past Tuesday their computer received none of the normal security updates or patches. It did strangely receive the May 2013 Malicious Software Removal Tool but that was it.

What I want to know is it OK to manually download the latest security updates (for May 2013) and will the OS recognize them without a problem and if I do this would it conflict with when I actually install SP1 at a later date.

Any experts please chime in. Thanks.

I recommend installing Service Pack 1 first before you install the security updates . Windows requires the SP to get the recent security updates .

I am going to install the SP1, but until I have the extra time to deal with any problems which might make the PC inoperable because of the SP1 I want to just download this months security updates at least.

Will there be any issue if I manually download this months security updates and download SP1 later. any conflicts?

Don't think it will allow you to download them without having SP1 installed . That's a must have .

I believe the updates will look to see if SP1 is installed . Please install SP1 first

Windows 7 RTM is now out of support - SP1 was released over 2 years ago.
Almost all future updates will require SP1 to have been installed - and all will test for it.
Updates created for SP1 systems cannot be installed on RTM systems - if you do try to force them, they are likely to break stuff along the way.

I see that there are about 43 other updates that are in line to be downloaded that go all the way back to 2011, should I download all these updates FIRST or just try and download SP1 and skip these older updates. My thought would be that I SHOULD install these older updates first. Correct.

notable older updates include.

-Intel Chipset update for Core i5-760
-updated drivers for AMD 5560 GPU
-MSE Security Essentials latest version



Also this PC has a AMD GPU and Catalyst Control Center.

Do you think I should install those notable updates FIRST?

Don't bother installing any drivers, at least for the moment.

the MSE update should have been installed when it first came out? - it's definitely worth installing that (assuming MSE is the current AV), and running a full system scan first.

The update selection was set to "let me choose which updates to download and install".

NO Java was ever downloading into this machine. Thank goodness!

All basic MS Windows security updates (and things like "active kill bits" ) are installed up to and including April 2013,

The MSE version is the previous one but all the definitions are completely up to date.

I have heard that the AMD Catalyst Control Center can possibly cause a problem with SP1, is that so and should I uninstall it before downloading SP1?

As noted, SP1 has been out for two years now. Subsequently 99.99999 percent issue with it have most definitely been resolved, including AMD's Catalyst Control Center.

I have been using Catalyst Control Center since introduced and have never had any problems with it, especially under Windows 7, SP 1 or not. And if there is an issue, it's not Windows 7, or SP1, but the software itself.

That said, since you are installing SP1, make sure you get the latest drivers.
