Hi everyone,

I've just made a fresh windows 7 install on my laptop, but can't activate it, since I get the error code indicated above. Can't activate over phone either since the option is completely absent and slui.exe 4 doesn't work (just shows me the screen to buy a new product key, type a different one or contact microsoft to help resolve the problem). Here is the diagnostic report, hope it helps:

Thanks for the fast replies:

Pendaws: I'm not sure what you wanted me to try from that thread, but as I've metioned, slui 4 doesn't work for me, I still don't get the phone activation option.
NoelDP: here's the report after rebooting. I've followed your indications after having done all the important updates in windows update, but it still doesn't activate:

I should also probably mention that I don't have the sticker anymore (and never had one in the first place) since I bought this copy online. What I did was to retrieve the serial number with a program called WinKeyFinder 1.75 before formatting. Could it be that the serial number it indicated isn't the correct one?

In that case the install is counterfeit and you meed to claim a refund from the vendor

I doubt that, it was an established vendor (onthehub.com through the ISIC card website), plus it worked for the previous install. I had received the product key by email + had access to it when I logged in to my account on their website, but I have lost all that info since, which is why I used that program to access the product key.

It's amazing how many 'established' vendors are fakers.
In this case I can state categorically that the vendor is SHAM.
You need to demand a refund with threats of legal repercussions.

Well.. could you be more precise about what makes you so categoric? The ISIC card is a serious business, they provide international student cards to unis around the world, and the offer was through them (» ISIC for reference). Plus the current onthehub websites seems legit enough to me. I know my way around computers and the internet a bit, without being an expert of course, but I don't see in that case why this vendor should be called fake. Also, as I've said, I've installed that copy before on my laptop, and had to enter the serial number, and everything was in order...

I agree with Noel here. NO genuine windows copy will come without a product activation key; whether it be on a sticker on the computer case if its a manufacturer bought system; or in the windows disc folder/sleeve if you bought a system builder copy in which case it would be inside the disc jacket. I would get your money back for it. Plus, a downloaded version is not the best and easiest way to go as having the disc and doing it that way is much better imo.

As I've said previously, matts6887, it did come with a key, to which I unfortunately lost access in the meantime. How could it have been a fake key if it activated correctly for the first install?

You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key (all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.

Everyone seems to ignore the post "I should also probably mention that I don't have the sticker anymore (and never had one in the first place) since I bought this copy online. What I did was to retrieve the serial number with a program called WinKeyFinder 1.75 before formatting. Could it be that the serial number it indicated isn't the correct one?"
I am not familiar with WinKeyFinder in particular, but generally these key finder programs work by extracting the key it finds in the Windows registry. However, that key isn't guaranteed to be the same as the one Windows was activated with - although it usually is. So it very well could be "the serial number it indicated isn't the correct one" rather than malfeasance on the part of the Windows software vendor.

Which is odd, since the Validation Code: 0 means it's genuine...

Well, your new copy of Windows should've come with a sticker... as I will show later in my post...

I use FinalWire AIDA64 myself to keep track of my keys to copy them into a Notepad document as backup.

My OEM System Builder copy (Bought from Amazon - Product Page) has the sticker still on it, I didn't put it my case, just in case I get a new case, but it still came with a CoA sticker.

The key that was originally used should be the key that came with the copy of Windows you purchased, just as mine did.
