Hi all,

So basically whats happened is that Windows doesn't recognize my DVD/CD-RW as being able to burn cd's. I can still read cd's and the drive still shows up in My Computer. I can't do a restore, because I have no idea how long its been nonoperational for. Here is a list of things I've tried:

  • Updating Drivers
  • Uninstalling and Re-installing drivers
  • Deleting Upper and Lower Filters
  • Modifying the Upper and Lower Filters
  • Modifying driver names
  • Changing drivers
  • Ran a SFC scan
  • Changing burning programs
  • Uninstalling iTunes

If anybody has any information on this, I would be glad to here it.
Thanks!

The only thing that springs to mind is to try another drive there are several lasers in these devices and they do give up the ghost and die, leaving the drive only partially operational.

Just a couple of other thoughts. Have you tried different brands of discs? Cleaning the optical drive lens? (A commercial cleaning kit is recommended.) Possible Fix-It solution from Microsoft:

Your CD or DVD drive can't read or write media

Sorry for the hugely unacceptable response time. The latest in the saga, is that ImgBurn see's my drive as burnable, and burns correctly. I have successfully burned 4 cd's and 2 dvd's. The only problem is that I get this warning:

"W 10:41:24 Duplex Secure's SPTD driver can have a detrimental effect on drive performance."

At least I can burn things though. Window's media player, Nero, iTunes, Explorer etc. Still see the drive as not burnable though. I am pretty much at a loss here.

Thanks for your responses,

Basically, I created a new administrative user to see if it could burn discs, and it could! So I exported my CD drivers, along with the CD registry key, logged out, logged into my user, and BOOM! It worked. I didn't even have to import the clean drivers or registry settings. Who knows why it worked, I'm just happy that I can burn discs again...

Thanks for everyone's at solving yet another one of my problems

"W 10:41:24 Duplex Secure's SPTD driver can have a detrimental effect on drive performance."

Just an extra tip:

If the above error continues, remove from your system any virtual drive software like daemon,alcohol.....and also uninstall\clean the SPTD using the http://duplexsecure.com/download/SPTDinst-v179-x64.exe

For virtual drive you can use Freeware MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM(MagicDisc) Overview

Finish with the above steps and post back with any results.

Thanks Panias! That fixed my ImgBurn warning too! Between fixing my CD/DVD burner, fixing iTunes, fixing ImgBurn, finding an alternative to Daemon tools, and some work stuff, this is turning out to be a pretty darn good day! :D

Thanks again Panias

IMO, Daemon tools, Alcohol and other ISO maker+virtual drive combos all bring in problems of their own. Many will vouch that they are using these without any problems. Notwithstanding for non-geeks and ordinary folks a simple, straightforward and non-problematic software that limits itself to fulfilling the specific requirement - nothing more, nothing less - is the ideal solution.

If you want just a simple virtual drive, go with the SlySoft Virtual CloneDrive .My two cents on it.
