I got Windows 7 basic with my Dell Inspiron 1545...i removed it and put Windows 7 ultimate....will my windows 7 basic key work in my new OS?

No. Win7 keys are edition specific. You need to purchase win7 ultimate to be able to use it.

Why not use the key that you got with your Windows 7 ultimate purchase?
