Got this in my Win7-64 system when applying the Office 2010 SP2 update. The error code suggests some (unspecified) problem with .NET and points to a FixIt routine to fix it.

The FixIt routine did not fix it becuase I got the same error after running it.

The second recommendation is to do a repair on .Net Framework 4 Client Profile. But my system does not have that.

The third recommendation is to repair .Net Framework 1.1 which my system does have. This said to run the .Net Framework Cleanup tool, which I did, but this also failed to complete normally.

It also suggested getting the complete .Net Framework 1, 1.1, and 3.5 installers and running them. That's what I'm about to do.

Well the .Net Framework 1 and 1.1 installers were the same, so I ran one of them and it completed OK. When I tried to run the 3.5 installer nothing happened - no messages, no dialogs, NADA.

So I tried to run the Office 2010 SP2 update again and (of course) it failed with the same error.

So this time I tried running the Windows Update Troubleshooter. This ran OK but said it was not able to fix the Update problem. It did say it fixed several other things though.

I rebooted and tried the Office 2010 SP2 update again. It failed with the same error.

Just for the fun of it I downloaded and installed .Net Framework 4.5 since many of the posts (and there are a lot of them) about this error mention that.

4.5 installed OK and did not ask for a reboot, so I tried the SP2 update again.

It failed with the same error.

I give up.

It's a custom build about 9 mos. old. I updated my specs to reflect the new configuration. Thanks for reminding me about this.

I had another idea on how to resolve this issue: completely de-install Office 2010 and then download the updated installer package (which will hopefully include all the SP2 fixes) and install that.

I have 2 concerns about that though:

1. Installing Office (I have the Professional version) is always somewhat problematic, so I am a bit fearful I might not be able to reinstall the SP2 version, assuming I can get an SP2 download someplace.

2. Will my WINSXS & Installer folders be left with all the old DLL's etc. from my original Office 2010 and have added to them the same stuff from the SP2 version? If this is the case then my WINSXS & Installer will be even more gigantic than they already are (10.6 GB, 3.5 GB) and I'd like to avoid this.

You need and should have all the .net framework updates on your pc, install them all. Then try again.

Well OK, but what does "all the .Net updates" mean? Windows Update does not say I need any. Plus I did just install the latest version (4.5) and it appeared to install OK.

Are you saying I need to install all the .Nets from 1.1 on? That would be almost as bad as all those version of the C++ runtime.
