windows update error code 80080005 windows 7 64 bit

Glad you've made progress on this issue Carl. Whenever I follow a thread I always learn something new.

I just came across Support for Microsoft Update and followed some links; thought I'd share this resource:
How to download updates that include drivers and hotfixes from the Windows Update Catalog.
Introduction

This article discusses how to download updates from the Windows Update Catalog. The Windows Update Catalog offers updates for all operating systems that we currently support. These updates include the following:
 • Device drivers
 • Hotfixes
 • Updated system files
 • Service packs
 • New Windows features
We guide you through the steps to search the Windows Update Catalog to find the updates that you want. Then, you can download the updates to install them across your home or corporate network of Microsoft Windows-based computers.

We also discuss how IT Professionals can use Software Update Services, such as Windows Update and Automatic Updates.

Important This content is designed for an advanced computer user. We recommend that only advanced users and administrators download updates from the Windows Update Catalog. If you are not an advanced user or an administrator, please visit the following Microsoft Web site to download updates directly:http://update.microsoft.com
That in turn took me to Microsoft Update Catalog (requires add-on). In the search box I entered the KB# giving you trouble. The results included all references to the KB.

Sometimes when neither the automatic update/manual check for updates work, I'll grab the standalone update and try that (as well as other file system checks)
.

Hi Slartybart,

Thank you for your input. I tried what you suggested, however, it did not seem to make any difference. I will keep this for future use however. I did go to the Microsoft Update Catalog via Internet Explorer, etc, however, the result was the same.

Thank you for the suggestion; I greatly appreciate it.. I'll keep posting on the updates..

Cheers,

Jim

Hi Noel,

I didn't have much luck. I created the "fix.cmd" as instructed. When I try to 'run as administrator', the cmd windows flashes briefly. I tried to see if it would update after that, just in case that was the method for it to work, however, no luck.

I'll keep trying...

Thank you for the advice.

Cheers,

Jim

Just to be clear - as of now you only have an issue with one update: KB2785220 (error 80070005). Security Bulletin Microsoft Security Bulletin MS13-006 - Important : Vulnerability in Microsoft Windows Could Allow Security Feature Bypass (2785220)

Does the update present in your WU history or installed updates, if it is, try uninstalling it and then check for updates

thanks for all of your feedback.

.....I tried when I got home, and suddenly there was something like 12 updates!!! I installed each one individually, and made note of the name of each update. The only update that will not install, either automatically or, downloaded and installed from the Microsoft site is: KB2785220 (error 80070005)......

Hi Slartybart, yes, just the one error is present.
It shows in update history as 'failed'. I have tried the various options of switching to "never check for updates", close, then open " install updates automatically". This had no effect.
Forgive the dumb question, but, what did you want me to uninstall? (KB2785220 has never installed correctly)

not dumb at all - you're correct, can't uninstall what isn't installed! Once in a while an install is corrupted - it's there, but WU thinks it still needs it and since it's corrupt, WU can't install it. Is the KB present in installed updates?

If there is a try again button or link (near the more help link) on the WU window when it fails, try clicking the link - if that doesn't help, clcik the button.

You could also try the more help link if presented. Sometimes it atcually does help.

Hi Slartybart..

No, it is not present in the 'installed updates' folder. I retried the 'try again' button several times; no luck. I have to run to work now, however, I'll try any suggestions when I return.

Thanks so much.

Cheers,

Jim

Hi Noel,

I tried the method under "Answer" using notepad, (creating a file and naming 'cmd'.) However it did not work for me. When I ran as administrator and tried to run "fix.cmd" (as described), the command prompt simply 'flashed' and disappeared. It did not appear to do anything. I did read the article. I can try the suggestion under the 'question' section (experimental) and see if this helps.

Thanks,

Jim

I think the problem is that the 'fix' requires Subinacl - which isn't fully functional in Win7 64-bit.

After a lot of messing around, I managed to see what the results of actually running the embedded commands are, in a functional system - and they are all 'Access Denied' errors :(

I think a much more comprehensive fix is required.
It's given me a couple of ideas, though - so I'll see what I can come up with.

I've got something which I think will do what's necessary....

The first thing is to download Subinacl, and run the installer -
You MUST install it to the C:\Program Files (x86) folder or nothing will work :)

Then download the fixcmd.zip file from my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive

extract the contained fix.cmd file, and right-click on it and select Run as Administrator

The Command Prompt window will remain open so you can see the last few lines of the output (I requested a display before and after, which overflows the available buffer)

reboot afterwards, and test.

Hi Noel,

I followed your instructions above. When I rebooted, I had 13 updates; KB2785220 was one of them. I cannot get it to install, I keep getting the same error message. (error code 80070005)
Thank you once again for trying.

OK - please run SFC /SCANNOW again, and post the new CBS.log file.
I'll see if I can work something out from that.

I'll have to see what we can do about those - but let's get the repairs to the known problems done first.

Back in a few minutes.

I've uploaded a file - crlaa.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)
Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\crlaa
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\crlaa
or
DIR E:\crlaa

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\crlaa <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

run the command (it should take almost no time)and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your SkyDrive Public folder, and post a new link

Also run a new MGADiag report, and post the result.

Looking at the CBS errors, it looks to be a problem with the registry.
Please open an elevated command prompt, and run the following command.

REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\PackagesPending" /S

Post the results (don't be surprised if it says 'not found' - it seems to only exist when updates are pending)

Also, run the CheckSUR tool - it may be able to find and correct the error.

Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and attach it to your reply.

Hi Noel,

I am at work now, however I will attack it as soon as I get home.. What the heck does some of those access denied terms mean? (They look rather embarrassing!! lol).
Thanks for your patience!

Jim

I suspect that it's actually a mis-diagnosis by the CBS system, and that it should be a 0x80070003 error (path not found), as the packagespending key may not exist.
If it does exist, then it's a problem with permissions.
my registry query will help us work out which - and the CheckSUR may fix it either way.
