Windows Update Fails Error Code 80070422

The service is started and automatic, was automatic (Delayed) but changed that - no difference.
I did receive 3 updates yesterday but Belarc Advisor states I'm short of 11 critical updates.
I believe it as I just installed Office and no updates are being offered.
Maybe the servers are down.
I hope using Timernuke to get around the activation issue hasn't caused this.

This happened to me too while I had some installations running on the background.

I guess it's either this, or at the same time windows automatic update was running, and it just fails to notify you of that.

After all my installations were finished, or after a restart, I don't remember, the Windows Update worked fine.

Too late...I ditched W7, too many issues.

Nothing helping restart, all programs shut down, all tries with the same problem on Vista... anyone help me please

First of all, please don't bump posts - especially when they are only 30 minutes old. I merged your two posts into one.

Second, you have provided us with no information at all - we need details to answer a question.

For example - give me suggestions to try when your car won't start....

You can probably name 5 or 6 off the top of your head, but a skilled mechanic can take that and make it a list of 25 or 30 things *easily*.

There could be one reason. I think I can say openly that most of the members have obtained their download from sources other than Microsoft? One of thos sources, is sending malware tucked into the System32 folder.
(W32.Sober-A, see thread http://www.sevenforums.com/system-security/973-w32-sober-conhost-exe.html One of its malevolent functions is to attach itself to your email folders and send you Email after replicating certain things it may find in there.

If you received the Update notification via Email, rather than through the update notification, then that is probably what has happened.
I dont know how it could have happened, but one of my family had it jump across from Windows 7 to his other installation, Windows XP. Maybe the malware is also attacking other OS's now. He is an IT manager and was suspicious that the Email was addressed to him by full name, and was from [email protected], to which he does not subscribe. Impulsively, he still went to the link - Boom!

He tried a few tricks to rid it but in the end he removed 7 and put his XP saved image back on the computer.
I think it is only in 6956 downloads.
Whether or not one can still get future updates, remains to be seen.
I have had a look at the page http://www.microsoft.com/protect/secnews/default.mspx
and could see no such security bulletin

actually there are no references that are in the sober worm in there
but the main thing is that the MS software malicious tool or windows defender detected it..
he must have been messing around...
there is no other explanation other than he was disabling some services or unnistalling some updates (office)
W7 is very picky about updates
i uninstalled one update restarted and then after it wouldnt check for any....
it would give me some errors....

as for his solution i think he disabled the services (BITS and Windows Update service)

I used my Vista RC 1 key instead of any activation bypassing methods....maybe that is why I never had update issues?

Using all your bad experiences in this thread (well aware of the implications) I also clicked the Email link and lost my update capability.

this error appears (guaranteed) a few days after (or instantly, I'm not sure ) you have run Timernuke....

To fix it and re-enable updates, you have to use the timernuke uninstaller... (from the same guy who made timernuke, we don't say names)

TimeNuke stops the security services and while they are disabled, Windows Update does not work.

Whoever is experiencing this problem constantly, has probably Timenuke installed.

My son and I have no retimers or hacks on our OS's. We are both Technet subscribers and the installations are genuine, so I do not think that is the reason.

have you checked if the services are running if not then start them ( if they are restart them)

With my recent similar error on one of the installs of windows 7 by just letting automatic updates start to download a few updates then stopping it and switching back to auto updates off and manual updates/ this fixed it... I also deleted the update folder before turning automatic updates on though.

recently i had this error aswell, i went googling nd such and came here, i didnt found out really how to solve it, no virus, services all running, but it seems there was a service not listed in the comments wich clearly was disabled, i didn't know wich 1 but i went back to just enabling m all, that did the trick, hope this is usefull for ya'll
