Windows Update won't install

So last night I saw the Install updates & shutdown option & so I went ahead. However all I got is the Installing 1 update of 1 message & this stayed there for over 40 minutes. So I turned off the power.

Today, I turned on my computer and went to Windows Update to see if any update was installed but it wasn't. There was 1 important update KB976098 however. So I clicked install but once again it seems to be stuck on the Installing update 1 of 1 part. I've tried clicking Stop installation but to no avail. I tried stopping the process but nothing happens. Each time I go to Windows Update it just tells me it is still installing.

I have tried shutting down on a couple of occasions but each time it tells me to wait whilst the update installs & then it just hangs on that installing screen & I have had to turn the power off.

I do not know if it is a problem with this update or with all updates but it is really annoying me now.

Please does anyone know what my problem is?

Thanks.

Hi, can you get your machine to go back to a time before you got the update.

Using System Restore.

Very good advice and you should take his advice. But, what about the future, what is the best way to avoid the problem, again? Must be somewhat common, because I had it myself. This is what I do.

I set my updates to notify me and I decide what updates I want. Some of those optional updates apply to programs that I do not use, etc.
When I update, I do not just check every update, I check a few at a time, in an attempt to limit the mb that are downloaded at any one time, and to limit the possible updates that caused a problem. Hope this works for you too. Happy Thanksgiving to you and Jfar.

Well I have restored to a couple of days ago (having had to turn the power off thanks to that pending installation) & having also hidden the update everything looks ok.

The thing is should I try installing that update again or leave it? Or should I just wait for another update to come along to see if it happens with a different one?

Make a system restore point, then if you want the update, try again. It shold work this time. If not you could go back with the system restore.

Windows 7 KB976098 Update Problem Solution(?)

I had the same problem with the KB976098 update causing a system stall. I tried several times without success and then remembered a trick I have used when having trouble installing some software. I tried a 'clean install' (run msconfig - as administrator - hide all windows services, disable the rest of the services and all the startup items, restart). I then ran Windows Install and the offending update installed properly. Don't forget to run msconfig again and re-enable the services and start up items.
