WinMail with W-7 build 7600

I jumped through all the hoops and got WinMail working with my early versions of Win-7. (using WinMail copied from Vista.)

But when I try to do the same trick with Win-7 build 7600, the Winmail.exe file will not run. All I get is the old hourglass running forever.

So I'm looking for a new trick, to make WinMail work on Win-7, build 7600.

Any hints?

The Vista folks here may be able to offer a solution, but I believe that WinMail is specific to Vista.

Windows Live Mail (the Outlook Express follow-on) is probably the way you want to go in Windows 7.

Well, WinMail IS IN Windows 7.
In the 64 bit version, it's in there twice, in both the 32 bit and 64 bit Program Files folders.
But it doesn't work.
I wonder if anyone knows if MS is planning on enabling it in the final version. ??

Testing Win-7 kind of wets the bed when you can't get the email program working. I had WinMail working just fine in the earlier versions, following the plan that I found right here in this forum.

PS: On another forum, I argued with one guy for several days about whether there was an email program in Windows 7 or not. It's there, if you know how to find it.

Doc, I used the same tut back in Feb or march, but have now moved on to win live desktop client and It has done me well. So I am not sure if it works now or not. Maybe you left something out of the recipe. Anyway good luck to you!

MS is trying to wean users off outlook, and win mail towards windows live mail. I doubt seriously if they wan to encourage ppl to stay on them.

Well, they've got me thoroughly confused.
Why would they put an email program in Win-7 and then disable it so it won't run?

I think someone at MS don't have both oars in the water!

An OS without email is like a pocket video game. Pretty dang'd useless!

MS is trying to get ppl to migrate to the "essentials" pack WLM,WLMessenger, etc. By not making it part of the OS they cant be sue'd for monopolizing the market like with IE

I have tried playing with it and the 64bit one loads into memory - but never shows any sort of a dialog box. Furthermore, it seems to be using memory actively, so I wonder if we let it go for a while if it will all of a sudden finally pop something up?

Also, you cannot change the compatibility mode b/c the item is a part of windows, or so it says lol....

On the Vista install, move the message store file so that it is not in the same folder as the program files. Then copy the complete program folder for Windows Mail in Vista to a USB stick. Rename the folder in W7 to OLD Windows Mail and then copy from the USB stick to the Program Files folder. Find winmail.exe in that copied folder and drag it to the Taskbar and pin it there to open Windows Mail. On first run, it will not find a message store folder and will create a new, empty one for you. Import from and old message store fille will usually NOT work, but you may get lucky. Good luck.

In Vista, open the WinMail app, then click on its menu, Tools/Options/Advanced/Maintenance/Store Folder to determine the location. Then tab until the location is highlighted, press Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard and use Explorer to go to it. It is the file that contains all of your stored mail and news posts.
