There's a weird bug in my win7 x64 ultimate.

realtek gigabit ethernet port on my laptop.
It's set to automatically obtain ip address from router dhcp.

When I pull/insert the cat5 several times (while troubleshooting router, I have to switch between wired/wireless), eventually windows is no longer able to obtain an ip address from any router it is plugged into.

while the cat5 is plugged in, it has a spasm, cycling from plugged in to unplugged, to disabled, then it tries again repeatedly, never successfully obtaining an ip address from the router.

If I try to disable/enable the nic, it doesn't help. same spasm cycle.

The only way to fix the issue is to reboot the computer.

Is there a trick to preventing windows from spazzing out like this so I don't have to reboot the pc?

Try go to the Device Manager, and find your Realtek Ethernet under the Network Adapters. Double-click on it.

Under Power Management tab, uncheck the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

Under Advanced tab, find the Speed & Duplex, change the value to 100 Mbps Full Duplex.
assume you're running a 10/100 LAN, but if it's a Gigabit LAN, then you need to set it to 1.0 Gbps Full Duplex.

In case of Gigabit, you can try 100 Mbps Full Duplex to see if it can run smoothly or not.
i mean reducing the speed, see whether the Gigabit Switch, the cable or your onboard Ethernet that cause the problem.

Sometimes the Auto-Negotiation got misfunction after a long duration of usage.

If the problem persists, try to uninstall (remove) the Ethernet from the Device Manager.
Restart the Windows, and reinstall it again.

Don't forget to UPDATE your Ethernet Driver to the latest version.

Hope this help :)
