Wireless issues with router

oh dear - i have a very sad 11 year old daughter this Christmas. We have taken delivery of a dell inspiron 545 with windows 7 and internal wireless card. To explain our set up before the computer arrived:

We have a desktop running vista wired into our broadband downstairs. We have a Dlink router dsl-g604t linked to this. Because of the v thick walls we have a couple of homeplugs in different rooms to broadcast the signal. This network was set up by my IT team at work. We have been happily receiving connections on a laptop running xp and a laptop running vista both upstairs and down.

I now have several problems due to windows 7 computer arriving;

Firstly, it can't pick up a wireless signal upstairs. If i plug in a spare homeplug, then the plug doesnt connect to the network (2 lights flash instead of 3 which indicates it hasn't configured with the others perhaps) and knocks out all the other pcs - but it does give a signal to the windows 7 pc and allows it to connect to the wireless network. If i take the plug out and move the pc downstairs it does pick up a wireless signal and connects.

However the big problem is this:

The computer connects wirelessly (downstairs where it can pick up a signal) but has no internet access - seems to be a problem with the gateway IP address (from running a diagnosis of the wireless network.

If we hardwire the windows 7 pc downstairs it works like a dream.

I have disabled IPv6 (|I think) and taken off firewalls but still no joy.

I am at my wits end with this right now - have £600 PC and no internet access

Anyone have any thoughts?

The Windows 7 compatibility advisor says there is no Windows 7 support for your dsl-g604t. I can't find any recent firmware updates for it either. At this time I would advise you to purchase a new Windows 7 compatible router to solve your problem. The second link below shows what I'm talking about.

There is only one firmware update for your model and it's dated back to 07.
There have been many routers that require a firmware update to work with Windows 7, but since your model is discontinued with no more support there is no chance of seeing a firmware update that will allow your router to work with Windows 7. http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=DSL-G604T

Thought that might be the outcome... so.... are there any routers you could recommend bearing in mind that they have to be compatible with xp, vista and windows 7? i've heard this one is pretty good? D-Link Xtreme Wireless N Router (DIR-825)?

also do you think i'll need to replace my solwise homeplugs pl-85pew? And do this need configuring or can i simply plug them in and go?

last question, will i need to set up a new wireless network when i have the new router? we did have a BT homehub router for a week or so which was hopeless but when we put it in it automatically picked up the existing wireless network.

Sorry for being such a dimwit - pcs, networks etc are not my thing at all!

I have the DIR-655 10/100/1000mbps both on the LAN and WAN, and and it's working great. Routers seem to get outdated every other Op system or so it seems. I'm on my third. Linksys makes some good ones also. So many to choose from.

If you need both wired and wireless get one of the dual output routers like mine that supports Windows 7, you will see the Win 7 logo on the page.

If you need both wired and wireless access that is the way to go.

Well i shall go on your recommendation! £93 on amazon. Do you think i'll need some homeplugs or wait and see how it goes? how can i check that this will work for xp, vista and wdow 7?

So when we get the router do we enter the wep key that BT have given us or does it demand something fancy?

why cant you get the latest router from bt ??

It's an 802.11n which works excellently for me and my friends and customers i have.

If you have a broadband deal with them just phone them up and ask them for the latest router and tell them your current one doesnt work

could do but had really bad experience with BT homehub...overnight it kept updating and knocking out the wireless homeplug networks. it's a little tricky as i don't understand it all but what i do need is a router which is backwards compatible and also some plugs which can broadcast - the bt home hub broadcast to one room only sadly and wouldn't talk to the homeplugs.

how long ago did you try this, and was it the latest black curved one ?

I would rate the latest BT router as amongst the higher end of the mid range hubs available on the market today ......
