Windows 7: Fonts - Delete

10 Jan 2011   #10

Windows 7

I installed a greeting card program in Dec. 2010, and it would appear that a lot of fonts were installed. When I use Excel spread sheet, a prompt comes up advising me to uninstall some fonts, though everything still works.
I opened the fonts folder, and in details view, several fonts are identified under "date modified", corresponding to the date of installation of the greeting card program.
Does "date modified" mean that a particular font was added on the referenced date, or that it was modified in some way?
How can I identify the unwanted fonts for deletion?
Please note that I have uninstalled the program as I do not like it.

Hello Hatstead,

I have added screenshots of all the default fonts listed in Windows 7 at the top of the tutorial to help you determine which ones the program may have added. The Date Modified could mean either one, but it would be good one to check agains the list first.

Hope this helps,

Thank you for your reply.
I don't see a tutorial or a list of fonts.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64

I think i have a problem in my font collection... i have added many many fonts. I'm having issues in Photoshop that i suspect is caused by a font issue. (guessing somewhat). I have backed up all my fonts and i want to delete all the fonts i have installed, effectively restoring the font folder to is default / installed state.

I'm just not sure how to do this.

Do i just delete them all, and any that i'm 'allowed' to delete will remove my installed ones? (i use directory opus not windows explorer, which has more 'power', i don't want to screw things up)

I can't find a obvious way to restore to default collection. I read the guide, but it does not seem to cover this. I have over 9,500 fonts so deleting them individually is not a practical option.

Thanks for any help..

Never mind.. i was frustrated.. deleted the lot, apart from system protected ones.. i'll reinstall the required fonts from my backup when i need them. Thanks

Windows 7 Home Premium

I too had font funk when I noticed there was sixty thousand fonts everytime I pulled down my font drop-box down in Photoshop.
(I'm new at Win7)

First I tried deleting them (as one would expect to work) then I found this tutorial, went right to the OPTION 2 (registry method) ...but... first I set a restore point with "System settings and files" as the type.

Did the deed as described at the top of this thread (OPTION 2- registry) and re-booted, they were gone, nice!...but... then I noticed the system was using a different font now for desktop icon labels and such, so I decided to go back to that restore point I set earlier.

This is where it got interesting, I did the restore, rebooted and the desktop icon labels looked right again, but I noticed Windows didn't put back all the fonts I deleted (which was nice).

It only restored:

Ebrima (hidden)
Iskoola Pota Bold (hidden)
Sylfaen (hidden)

I suspect one or more of those (hidden) fonts contain the system's default font for the OS.

Anyway I decided that was nice compromise, my fonts drop-box in Photoshop is much more manageable now without all the worlds fonts. I rebooted again and tried my apps and Windows stuff trying to see if anything was adversly affected and all seems well.

I didn't take a before screenshot (you all know how many fonts are there) but here is the after screenshot, both Control Panel-Fonts, and what appears in Photoshop's font drop-box:

Note: I don't know why those screen shots look so bad, they are nice and clear pics (the files I uploaded) must be some automatic resizing thing going on with the forum software.

Delete fonts
Ok, well, I'm a fool. I needed to install a font, thought I clicked just one, but somehow must have chosen all. I have loaded over 10,000 fonts on my system. How can I revert to just the basic font set that comes with Win7? Deleting manually would just be too time consuming.

Hi I would like to have a bare minimum of fonts in my Fonts folder. I only use a few fonts, and none in Asian languages. I've read the advice to leave the fonts alone and hide rather than uninstalling them, but in a number of programs they don't get hidden, even after I've hidden them in...
