User Profiles - Create and Move During Windows 7 Installation

Thanks for the explanation as to when you use Windows Backup vs Macrium. Are the sizes similar, initially? Does either product utilize compression?

I didn't realize Macrium could create a system image of a live environment! After I complete my installation, I'll try it out. Do you use Windows' Task Scheduler for this?

Well Kari it's been a year since relocating my user folders to Drive D:. Like you said, on the safe side I created the C:\Users, C:\Users\Public and C:\Users\Your_Username folders. After a year of use, these folders still are empty. Thank you again, and happy holidays.

Forgetting this trivial issue and moving on to real essential questions, both single malts you mentioned are really good. The main difference is the casks used; Laphroaig Triple Wood is first matured in American oak barrels (used previously for bourbon), finalized in sherry casks. This together with the traditional Laphroaig distilling methods gives it a nice, deep color and a very strong, nice smoke flavor.

Ardbeg Uigeadail is matured only in sherry casks, which together with Ardbeg's traditional distilling methods gives it a walnut like flavor and almost dark red color. Both single malts are excellent, in a scale 0 to 100 I would give Laphroaig 90 and Ardbeg 85.

After installing Win7 on the SSD, when I purchased the PC I moved the user profile folders like MyDocuments, Pictures, Videos, Downloads, etc to another drive. But the user profile grew to more than 20GB in size, especially by applications like Photoshop elements, LightRoom, etc, that write caching ans such data in Local and Roaming folder. When I move the whole user profile to a mechanical drive, does that has negative effect on performance (caching etc. is slower.

How to move user profile in Windows 7 to another directory / drive.

1. After installing windows 7 you will be greeted with a user creation prompt press shift+f10 and you should get a cmd window up like in the image belowcmduser

2. Copy the Users Profiles, Program Files And ProgramData Folders onto the Partition you want to use

robocopy "C:\Users" "D:\Users" /E /COPYALL /XJ
robocopy "C:\Program Files" "D:\Program Files" /E /COPYALL /XJ
robocopy "C:\ProgramData" "D:\ProgramData" /E /COPYALL /XJ

3. Delete the old folders and create links For Program Files:

rmdir "C:\Program Files" /S /Q
mklink /J "C:\Program Files" "D:\Program Files"

For the User Profiles:

rmdir "C:\users" /S /Q
mklink /J "C:\users" "D:\users"

and lastly ProgramData:

rmdir "C:\ProgramData" /S /Q
mklink /J "C:\ProgramData "D:\ProgramData"

If you have any permissions issues while deleting C:\ProgramData don't worry about them just try to delete it and make the links again after first reboot
4. Now open regedit simply by typing regedit on the cmd window
5. To change the program files path navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Wi*ndows\CurrentVersion and edit the ProgramFilesDir and CommonFilesDir as needed regeditproc
6. For the user profiles you'll need to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Wi*ndows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList and again edit the paths as needed regeditprof
7. Exit Regedit and the cmd window
8. Continue to create your user
9. Reboot your machine and you should be good to go

I've built the machine a while back. Got the first generation SSD drives. Since they're only 60gigs combined, I've quickly noticed that Windows takes up a LOT of space under the user profile directory and apps data. I was surprised to see that there's no easy solution to this...and surprised that no one has showed a quick HOW TO GUIDE on how to move the directories the proper way.

In this video tutorial, I will show you how to move the user profile and apps data folder to a different drive. I did this right after a fresh Windows 7 install. This seems to be the best method from what I've found online.

Hi Kari, Tomorrow my wife works all day and I have this week vacation. So I will use your pdf as guide to follow. Currently on my "120GB" SSD is have only 4.5 GB free (5%) and mainly because of the content of C:\Users\my_name\AppData my User profile grew to over 20GB even despite the documents, Pictures, Videos and Download folder were already "relocated"

So hopefully tomorrow afternoon I have a new clean install that will stay clean over longer period of time.

In the Pdf you describe clean install. During this install does it not create those folders.
